Be it known that I. WILLIAM Z. MUsGRAvn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a match box, and the object isv to provide a receptacle designed to be carried in the pocket, and provided with means for shielding a lighted match and a ci ar being lighted.

A further o ject is to provide a box formed with a slidable shield adapted to serve the purpose indicated.

Another object is to provide a receptacle constructed in the manner hereinafter specified, and provides in -connection therewith a shield having the form of a tubular element, rectangular vin cross section, one surface being roughened or corrugated, and one of the side walls being slotted to accommodate a lighted match.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that modifica tions may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The body of the receptacle is designated 10 and may be formed of a single sheet of metal bent to produce a box approximately rectangular in cross section. The approaching edges 11 and 12 are slotted at intervals as shown at 13, and an inner connecting strip or plate 14 is provided with ears 15 which pass through the slots, and are then deiiected or bent over into intimate engagement with the outer surface of the box. I do not limit myself to this particular type of connection, as any box of suitable con` struction may be employed. The vbottom of the box is designated 16 and is formed with a fiange 17 which fits over the adjacent end of the body of the box. l

The cover 18 is connected by means of a hinge 19 with the body portion, a suitable gasket 20 being provided to prevent the entrance of moisture. Projecting elements 22 formed on the hinge are engaged by a flat spring 24 .which passes under the connecting plate mentioned above and is thereby retained in proper position for the purpose intended. TheV cover is provided with a :projecting element 26 formed by punching from the inner side ofthe lflanged cover, this element serving as an engaging device to permit of the opening of the cover. The body of the receptacle is provided with beads 27 and 28, and projecting elements 30 formed by punching from the inner side are provided for securing the bottomY to the box per se.

The wind shield 31 includes four side walls and constitutes a tubular element having a slot 32 formed in one end thereof for the accommodation of the lighted match. One wall of the tubular member is roughened or provided with corrugations 33, serving an obvious purpose. The element 31 is slightly greater in cross section than the body of the box so that the walls of the box are spaced from the inner wall of the element 31, the thickness of the botto-1nl andof the adjacent bead surrounding the boxv accounting for the difference.

The tubular member 31 may if desired be formed of sheet metal, the approaching edges overlapping as shown at 31 and being connected by soldering, o-r in any other suitable manner. A metallic frame 40 is suitably connected, with one surface of the element 31, the frame including inwardly turned flanges 42 and a projecting element 4f3`at one end. The frame from the surface of the e ement 31, and advertising matter may be inserted within the frame after which the projectingI element is bent over and acts as a retaining device. It is obvious that the owners card or a photograph may be substituted for the advertising matter. The device is intended for use either as an advertising medium or as an article for sale and in the latter event, it may be of more expensive l proaching edges of the sheet beingprovided with slots spaced inwardly from said edges,
