ATTEIRNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN E. CARPENTER, 'on RosELLE, NEvT JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPOOL-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,601, dated February 17, 1874; application filed December 29, 1873.
To all whom t may concern: l
` Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. (,ARPENa TER, of Roselle, in the county of Union and and then pointed outin the claims.
Figure l represents a vertical section of the apparatus, taken on the line x .r of Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view with the cover oft'. Fig. 8 is atop view of the tension-disk on the stand in the thread-box. Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the cutter on the line y y.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate eorresponding parts.
A is the box. B is the cover. C is a stand rigidly attached to the bottom of the box. The lower end of the stand is a socket, which receives a pivot-pin, I), which allows the box to be turned on the table E. F represents spoolpivots, which. are fast in the bottoni of the box. G are the spools of thread. l-I represents the thread. lhe stand C may be made of either metal, wood, or other suitable material. In this example of my invention I show a tension-disk, 1,1011 the stand, having a hook or similar device for each spool. The thread from the spool may be carried to this disk, as seen at J, for giving a tension to it and guiding it from the spool. This arrangement is not indispensable, as the thread may leave the spool, as seen at K, and be carried up through the disk-plate L, which is designed to be about level with the top of the cover B. The holes in this disk are numbered on the top of this disk to indicate the number of the thread. M is a wheel formed of one or more plates, around Ithe periphery of which is placed a close spiral wire, N, for holding the thread when it is beA ing out. The thread, as it is carried up from the plate L, is passed between two of the con-V volutions ofthe spiral, and is compressed suiii ciently to hold it for cutting. Ois the cutter, which is semicireular in form, attached to the top of the wheel-disk M at its ends, as seen in Fig. l, and is covered by the spiral P. This spiral is broken away in the drawing to show that the knife O is attached to the arch Q of the stand. The thread is carried over the spiral and forced down between two of the eonvolutions onto the edge oi' the cutter, and is thus readily severed. In thus cutting the thread the` lingers of the operator are protected by the spiral.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--n l. The combination, with a thread.cutter,0, of the eircuinjacent wire coil or protector I, applied as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with a thread-cutter, O, of a spiral wire, N, to hold the thread, in the manner set forth.
3. The combination, with a station ary threadcutter holder, O, of rotary spool-box A B, as
and for the purpose specified.
4t. The combination, with spools G, arranged in arotary spool-box, of a tensiondisk, I, hav ing: a hole for each spool, an apertured diskplate, L, thereabove, and the disk M, having spiral wire N, to maintain the thread at the proper tension at all points before being out, in the manner described.
BENJ. F. CARPENTER.
