.J. P. GORDON.
' CORD HOLDER FOR GRAIN BINDERS.
No. 359,781. Patented Mar. 22, 1887.
WITNESSES N, PETERS. PhMo-Llthngrnphen Wuhingtun. DJ;
UNITED STATES PATENT JAMES F. GORDON, OF ROCHESTER, NEIV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO PHILIP T. DODGE, OF IVASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
CORD-HOLDER FOR GRAIN-BINDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,781, dated March 22, 1887.
1883, Serial No. 96,467. Divided and this application filed January 12, 1885. Serial No. 152,665-
(No model.)
.To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. GORDON, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord Holders for Grain-Binding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple device by which the cord may be securely held in close proximity to the bundle.
To this end it consists in a crown-wheel, or a wheel having an annular notched flange on its side face, combined with a clamp to confine the cord in said notches.
As my device is applicable to machines of various forms, and may be variously arranged and operated in connection with the other parts of the machine, I have represented in the accompanying drawings only such parts as are necessary to an understanding of the device and its mode of action.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the clamping-wheel and the clamp or press ure device acting in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the cordholding device and the table on which the grain is bound, with the end of the needle orbinderarm in position to presentthe cord to the wheel. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the parts represented in the preceding figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the clamping-wheel, of circular form, having. on one side an annular flange, I), provided with a series of notches, c, to receive the cord.
B represents a clamp or pressure plate adapted to co-operate with the notched flange in such manner as to confine the cord therein. This clamp is preferably grooved, as represented in the drawings, to admit the flange therein. It may be modified in form at will, provided it is adapted to prevent the escape of the cord from thenotches andhold the same with reasonable firmness therein.
0 represents the binder-arm or needle, by which the cordis passed around the gavel and laid into one or anotherof the notches in one edge of the wheel in the manner represented. It will be understood that the cord is laid into a notch outside of the clamp, and that by subsequent rotation of the wheel it is carried into and beneath the clamp, so as to be secured in place thereby. The binder-arm may be constructed and arranged to operate in any ordinary or approved manner, provided only it presents the cord to the notches of the wheel. The wheel may be revolved by devices of any appropriate character; but I recommend as a simple means for the purpose a reciprocat ing pawl, 11, arranged to engage in ratchetteeth e,formed on the periphery of the wheel. retrograde motion of the latter being prevented by a second pawl, f.
It is to be distinctly understood that the formation of ratchet-teeth on the edge of the wheel, although advantageous, is not a necessary feature of my clamping device, as the teeth may be replaced by gearteeth, or the pe ripheral teeth wholly omitted, and the wheel mounted on the end of a suitable operatingshaft.
The clamping-wheel may be arranged in any proper position in relation to the binding-ta ble and binding-arm, and the latter may be of any suitable form adapted to place the cord in the notches of the wheel.
The present invention is restricted to the matters and things hereinafter specifically claimed and I hereby disclaim as part of the present invention any other feature or combination of features which are included in the orignal application, No. 96,467, filed May 28, 1883, of which this constitutes a division.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A cord-holder for grain-binders, composed of a rotating flanged disk with notches in the edge of the flange, into which the cord is placed by the needle, in combination with a grooved shoe arranged to embrace the flange and hold the cord in the notches, substantially as described.
2. A cordclamping wheel fora grain-binder, having an annular side flange provided with cord-receiving notches.
3. The cord-clamping wheel provided with the peripheral teeth and with the side flange having cord-receiving notches therein.
4. A cord-receiving crown-wheel,combined the clamp to confine thecord therein, theme 10 die to present the cord to the notches, and means, substantially as shown, for imparting an intermittent rotation to the wheel.
