tion and being incidentallyof such arrangement that the various parts may be disconnected and folded whereby to be disposed in a compact bundle for convenience in transportation or storage.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is adjustable whereby to be used eiciently for holding the shape and imparting shape to trousers or' diiierent width in the leg portions.
Another object is the provision of adevice of this character in which the pressing members proper may be disconnected from the support so that the latter may be used simply as a hanger for the garment.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character which is provided with novel clamping means for holding the various elements of the device in trouser pressing position, other clamping means being provided at the joint of the pressing members for preventing them from casual displacement.
An additional object is the provision oi'a combined device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in construction, easy to assemble and disassemble, simple to operate, highly eiicient and'positive in action, durable in service and a general improvement in Vthe art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is an elevation of my device ready for use as a trouser presser.
Figure 2 is an edge view thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1. i
Figure 1 is a Adetail sectional view on the line of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is an enlarged view of one of the clampingmembers 'showing it in inoperative position. c
Figure k6 is aV detail view showing the l means for connecting the clamping members with the hanger portion.
Figure 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the clamping members.
Figure 8 is a cross-sectional view on the i` line 8 8 of Figure 1.
n Figure '9 is a perspective View showing the Y various elements of the Vdevice infolded position.
VReferring more particularly to the' drawings, I have shown my device as'comprising a hanger member which is formed'of a pair or elongatedV boards 10 which preferably have their confronting bases slightly vrej cessed as indicated at 11 for the accomodaners of the board with loops 13. The other 8 5 end portions of the wire vmembers 12 are arranged in a V-shape as indicated at 14 and are connected at their ends with one another and also with a suspension 15. Slidable upon the V-shaped portion 14 of the wirev members is a slip-ring 16 which may be slid downwardly toward the board Vmembers 10 whereby to urge the latter into clamping engagement with the cuffs of trousers to be either pressed or supported. u
rlhe numeral 17 designates presser'members in general which -aresuspended from the loops 13. Each presser member 17 inchicles two similar members each formed of upper and lower sections 18 and 19 respectively which are hingedly connected by means of strips 2O of flexible material suitably secured tothe meeting ends of the secn tions. The upper ends of both lof the sec.- tions 18 of each pair carry elongated flexible members 21 which are inserted through the loops 13 and which carry hoops'22 engageable within eyes 23 whereby the flexible members 21` may be secured in looped en- 1 gagement upon the loopsv13 as clearlyidisclosed in Figures 1 and 2. By this construction it will be readily apparent that the presser members 17 may be quickly and easily engaged with and disengaged from the supporting member formed by the boards 10 and the wire frames carrying the same.
The sections 18 and 19 of each pair of presser members are wedge-shaped incrosssection as clearly indicated in Figure 3 and it is intended that the forward and rear edges of the trousers to be pressedbe engaged between the sections of the respective presser members in a manner which will be readily apparent. In order to exert clamping action between the sections, I make use of a plurality of V-shaped clamps 24T. each of which is formed from a single length of resilient material and all of which are arranged upon the members 17 in straddling relation thereto. Each clamp 2d has one side formed with an elongated slot 25 through which passes securing member 26 which is driven or otherwise secured to one o f the sections of the members 17 as clearly shown. It will be apparent that when the members 21 are forced upon the assembled sections constitutingl the members 17 that the members 17 will enert a clamping action upon the edges of the garment disposed therebetween so as to provide the much de sired crease in the trousers. T he provision of the elongated'slot permits the necessary movement of the clip or clamp 21 into its clamping position and also permits movement thereof into its disengaging position.
In order to adjust the positions lof the pairs of members 17 so as to adapt them for use upon trousers of different widths in the leg portions, I provide bars or rods 27 which are pivoted at 28 at one end and which have their other` ends formed with notches 29 selectively engageable with hooks 30 carried by the other members 17. By this connection it will be seen that the members 17 may be adjusted toward or from each other by engaging the hooks 30 within the desired ones of the notches 29 and this adjustment will hold the pairs of members 17 in the proper adjusted position.
As previously stated the sections 18 and 19 of each of the members 17 are hingedly connected by means of the flexible members 20 described. It is therefore essential to provide some means for preventing swinging movement at this joint under ordinary conditions. In order to effect this, I make use of a plurality of V-shaped clips or clamps 31 which are permanently associated with the proper sections and each of which has one leaf or arm portion formed with a longitudinal slot 32 and a cross-intersecting slot 33. These clamps or clips 31 are held in association with the sections 18 by suitable fastening members 34: which may naturally be screwed, nailed or the like, these fastening members being passed through the longitudinal slots 32 as clearly disclosed. lNhen the fastening members 3/1 are in the longitudinal slots 32 and the clamping members 31 are pressed onto the members 17 it will be readily apparent that the members 31 will cover the hinged joints of the sections 18 and 19 so that swinging movement thereof will be prevented. Whenever it is desired to break the joint, it is merely necessary that the operator grasp the various clips or clamps 31 and pull the bight portions thereof away from the members 17 until the fastening members' 31 come opposite the transverse slots 33 whereupon it is merely necessary to push 'the clips or clamps 31 longitudinally of the members 17 to dispose the fastenings 34 in the transverse slot whereupon the clamping members 31 will not be disposed over the hinged joints and then the sections 18 and 19'may be folded one upon the other.
In the use ofthe device when it is desired to press a pair of trousers, it is first necessary to slide the ring 1G upwardly so that the board members 10 will be separated. At the same time the clamps 2a and 31 must be moved laterally with respect to the elements 17 so that the sections 18 and 19 of the respective members 17 may be sepa` rated. The cuff portions of the trousers are then engaged between the boards 10 after which the clip ring 16 is forced downwardly to cause the board members 10 to exert a clamping action upon the trousers culi'. rThe forward and rear edges of the trousers, that is the portions where it is desired to produce a crease, are engaged between the membersy 17, after which the clamps 211 and 31 are pressed transversely of the members 17 to force the latter together and this will of course exert a clamping action upon the forward and rear edges of the trousers which will produce the much desired crease therein. As will be noted from the drawings, the distance between the members 17 at the front and rear of the trousers may be regulated by means of the pivoted bars 27 which are provided with the notches 29 engageable upon vthe hooks 3() so that the de vice is equally well adapted for use in working` upon trousers which are narrow or wide through the legs as the case may be.
. When the use of thevdevice is not desired, it is readily apparent that the rods 27 may be disengaged from the hooks 30 and swung upon their pivots 28 whereby to lie within recesses 35 formed in the edges of one set of the members 17 and that the clips or clamps 241 may be slid laterally with respect to the associated elements 17 so that the' clamping action will be no longer exerted.
It is or" course necessary that the cla1nping members 31 be likewise slid laterally and then be moved longitudinally of the members 17 so as to bring the securing members 34 within the transverse slots 33, whereupon the respective members l18 and 19 may be swung one upon the other. The hooks 22 are of course disengaged from the eyes 23 so that the members 17 formed of the sections 18 and 19 maybe entirely disengaged from the clamping and supporting portion of the device. When the parts are thus removed and folded it is apparent that they may be bundled into compact form as illustrated in Figure 9 and be secured by means of an elastic band, a piece of string or the like so that a. compact bundle will be formed which will be convenient in transportation and storage,
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a. simply constructed and consequently very inexpensive device which is equally well adapted for use in merely supporting or Vsuspending trousers or in pressing the same so as to restore them to their proper shape and to provide the much desired creases thereof. Owing to the simplicity of the construction it is apparently seen that there is practically nothing to get out of order and the device. will consequently have a long life and satisfactorily perform all the functions for which it is intended.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subj oined claims.
I-Iaving thus described my invention I claim;
