Application March 25, 1947, Serial No. 737,012
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to garment hangers, and more particularly to the provision of a hanger adapted to support pants, skirts, and the like, having various thicknesses of cloth.
It is an object of the invention to provide a pants and skirt hanger having, when closed, a thickness not exceeding one inch, and saving space on a hanger supporting pole.
A further object is to provide a hanger which lies fiat when open enabling the easy insertion of garments.
A further object is to provide a hanger having clamps formed from corrugated blocks or blocks having slots to eliminate the use of felt, to hold garments securely.
A further object is to provide a garment hanger which takes care of a complete suit, or jacket and skirt.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a hanger embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the manipulation of an element of the device for clamping a garment.
Fig. 3 is a side view of one operation in the clamping of a garment, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a side view of another operation in the clamping of a garment.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig 2.
Referring to the drawings. the garment hanger is shown to comprise a pair of clamp blocks l and 2, which have corrugated surfaces 3. Attached to the ends of block 2 are the lower ends 4 of a wire hanger 5, the upper ends of which are connected to a sleeve 6, which threadedly receives the stem 1 of a hook 8.
Attached to block 2 is a wire member having spaced legs 9 fixed in the block 2, the upper end of each leg being looped to form an eye In and extends across to form a bar ll.
Attached to the bar I are two rods l2, spaced apart and having at their upper ends eyes l3 through which pass the bar II, the eyes serving as hinges to enable bar I to be rotated about the bar ll.
Attached to bar I is a ,ueshaped member l5 with legs 54 having corrugations IS, the legs M being fixed in the bar I.
Associated with the bar 2 is a rod l? having at each end a. loop it which encircle loosely the legs 9. At each end of the rod I! is a hook 59, which hooks serve as finger pieces.
In operation, a garment, such as pants or a skirt, is inserted between the bars I and 2 as shown in Fig. 3. The legs [2 swing outwardly to enable the easy insertion of the garment. The finger pieces l9 are then pressed down to cause the rod H to engage the corrugated legs M of the member IE to move the bar I in clamping position with bar 2. The corrugations 3 on the bars I and 2 cause a tight clamping action, and the arrangement enables the clamping of garments of various thicknesses. The clamping action is shown in Fig. 4.
When not in use, the hook 8 can be folded into the borders of the hanger, which enables convenient packing of the hanger. When in use, the hanger will take various thicknesses and occupy little space on a rack or hanger pole.
The above description is to be considered as illustrative and not limitative of the invention of which modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is:
In a garment hanger, a first bar and a second bar, said bars having corrugated clamping surfaces, a wire bar having legs attached to the second bar, rods connected to the first bar and having eyes hingedly connected to the wire bar, a u-shaped member having corrugated legs attached to the first bar, and a member slidable on the legs of the wire bar to engage the corrugated legs to urge the first and second bars to a clamping position, said member having finger pieces thereon.
