TROUSERS STRETCHER AND PRESS EB.
Application filed May 11,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISRAEL CoRBE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers Stretchers and Pressers, of which the following is a specification. e
My invention relates to apparatus for stretching and pressing trousers and has, as
a chief object, the provision of a simple,
pose, to serve as a combined coat hanger and trousers stretcher and presser.
Other objects attained by my invention will be pointed out hereinafter. I N
In the drawings attached hereto and forming a part hereof;
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved apparatus showing the manner of lacing a pair of trousers in the apparatus preliminary to stretching and pressing them.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the apparatus with the parts in position for stretching the trousers secured therewith.
Figure 3 is a front view of the apparatus similar to Figure 1 but showing the position of the parts when completely assembled with a pair of trousers.
Back member 1 carries near its lower edge a cross piece 2 secured thereto by a flexible cable 3 which is fastened to the cross piece in any convenient'manner and which extends through openings 4 in the back member. This cross piece is thus loosely connected to the back member but may be drawn tightly against the latter and held in such position by the cable.
Near the upper end of member 1 another cross piece 5, similar to cross piece 2, is
secured thereto by another flexible cable 6, after the manner described in connection with cross piece 2. If desired, cables 7, block 8 and ring 9 may be fastened to cross piece 5 as illustrated thereby constituting 1921. Serial No. 468,737.
means by which the device can be suspended from ahook or rod and at the same time 1 furnishing a. frame which as a coat hanger. P Y
. Cables 3 and 6 are provided on theback of member 1, one. with a hook 10 for engagement with a heavy coil spring 11 on the other, the function of the spring being to exert at-ension on the cables after the cross pieces 2 and 5 have been brought into close assembled contact with member 1. f
If deemed necessary stiffening strips 12 may be placed along the edges of memberl, as illustrated in Figure2, and secured there to permanently, or loosely, as by being mounted on cables 3, 6, and 14. I
A front member 13, somewhat smaller than but of the same general shape as back member 1, is held in place between cross pieces 2 and 5 by a flexible cable 14 extendmay be utilized ing through openings 15 in the back mem- I her 1, the free ends of the cable being provided with a'ho'ok 16 and a coiled spring 17 for engagement with each other. V Although the parts of my improved device may be made of wood, metal or other material, I prefer to make the front and back members of cardboard, thecrosspieces of wood and the cables of wire. 4 9 1 The operation of my device is substantially as follows: A pair of trousers to be stretchedand pressed is carefully folded and placed on member 1 with cross pieces 2 and 5 in. position as shown in Figure 1. Cable 3 is pulled to bring cross'piece 2 into the posi- 7 tion shown in Figure 3, where it clamps the trousers tightly against member 1. Then the trousers are stretched by movement of cross piece 5 to the position shown in Figure ,2, where it presses tightly against the trousers and member 1. .The'c-able 6 is pulled tight and hook 10 is engaged with spring 11 to maintain the cross piece in place. Next front member 13 is placed on the trousers between the cross pieces and is secured in position by bringing cable 14 across the member and engaging hook 16 in spring 17.
The initial amount ofstretching tension exerted on the trousers between the cross pieces will be continued so long as the cross pieces are held tight against the trousers and packed with other articles as in a suitcase or trunk.
For purposes of illustration, I have elected to disclose only one type of apparatus em-, bodying my invention and have described his preferred form of construction. I do not wish, how ver, to be understood as limiting myself to the particular combination, construction and arrangement of parts since obviously many changes could be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a trousers stretcher and presser, in combination, a back -member, cross pieces loosely carried at opposite ends thereof, and cable means secured to the said cross pieces and passing through the said back member and retaining both of the said cross pieces in clamping engagement with the back member.
2. In a trousers stretcher and presser in combination, a back member, a cross piece at one end thereof and flexible cables secured to the cross pieceand passing through the said back member whereby a garment may be clamped between the cross piece and back member, a second cross piece at the opposite end of the said member and flexible cables secured to the cross piece and passing through the said member whereby a garment clamped to the back member by the first said cross piece may be stretched and then clamped to the back member.
3. In a trousers stretcher and presser in combination, a back member having reintending through said holes in the back mem ber, spring connectors uniting the cables at the rear side of the back membeiyone of the said cross pieces having means 'secured thereto for engagement with a supporting member and a-frontmember adjustably maintained between the'said cross pieces and substantially parallel with the said back member. I
5. In a device of the class described, a back member provided at one end with means for clamping both ends of a folded garment thereto, and provided at the opposite end with means for both stretching the-said garment and clamping-the said garment against the back membenand means for maintaining the garment in substantial parallelism with the said back member. p
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
