PRESSING MACHINE.
Application led March 31, 1923. Serial No. 629,102.
To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ost/'AR HAUPTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of this invention is to improve upon the pressing device disclosed in my copending application for patent Serial No. 584,605, led August 28, 1922,
wherein is shown a portable pressing device particularly intended for home use having a pair of pivotallyconnected sections each of which is provided with an electrical heating unit, the device being of a simple construction and of a size and weight which will permit it to be readily lcarried in a trunk while traveling or stored away in a bureau drawer or closet.
A further object is to provide resilient means which will permit the pivoted sections to yield and adjust themselves to articles of various thicknesses when the pivoted sections are firmly clamped thereon in closed engagement.
For the accomplishment of these and such further objects as will hereinafter be apparent to those skilledl in the art to which this appertains, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Asshown in the drawings, the device consists of a pair of pivotally connected upper and lower shallow box like sections 10 and 11 preferablyv constructed of a light butV strong wood. Seated within each section in Contact with the bottom thereof is a backing 12 preferably of cotton padding or other suitable yielding material, on the top of which is placed a heating unit 13 consisting of a len h of fine wire 14 arranged to form a plurallty of spaced transversely extending stretches or lengths across each section according to the well known constructions of electrical heating units. The wire forming the heating units is insulated with asbestos or other suitable material to prevent localization of the-heating effect immediately adjacent the wires and to secure a substantially equal distribution of the heat over the entire area of the pressing surfaces. The specific construction of these heating units forms the subject matter of a co-pending application Serial No. 629,103 filed concurrently herewith, to which reference may be had for a more detailed description thereof.
Each of the sections is provided with a pressing cloth 15 preferably consisting of two juxtaposed sheets of canvas' which are laid across the heating units and the side edges and ends thereof are secured in place by means of the bars or cleats 16 detachably secured to the case by screws 17 or other suitable securing means. The pressing cloth is drawn tightly down upon the heating unit and serves to hold the heating unit 13 and backing 12 securely in position.
Means are provided for clamping the sections securely together in closed position and comprises the locking catches 18 of the well known trunk type, the lower member of which is secured to the lower section 11 of t-he device and the upper member of' which is secured to the upper-section 10. As these devices are of common and well known construction a further detailed description thereof is unnecessary.
The pivotal connection of the two sections comprises a hollow housing 19 having the laterally projecting ears 20 which are secured as by means of the screws 21 to the backwall of the lower section 11. An anchoring pin or stud'22 is driven into and passes across the housing and serves as an anchoring means for the lower end of a strong coiled spring 23. The housing 19 terminates at its upper end in a pair of spaced jaws 24 between which are neatly engaged a pair of similar spaced jaws 25 which are preferably integral with the horizontally extendin plate section 26 secured as b the screws 2% to the top face. of the top section 10. An anchoring and pivot pin 28 is driven into suitable apertures ofthe jaws 24 and has coiled thereon the upper end of the spring 23, the spring normally acting to urge or pull the pin 28 towards the pin 22. The jaws 25 are provided with the elongated slots 29 which permit a limited movement of the pin 28 to and from the pin 22.
The operation of the device is as follows, assuming that it is desired to press a garment such as a pair of mens trousers, the catches 18 are released and the upper section 10 is thrown back upon the pivot ,pin 28, one or both le s of the trousers are placed upon the presslng cloth 15 of the lower section 11, the upper section is then closed upon the arment, and the catches 18 are locked in tlght clamping engagement.
The thickness of the material in many cases would prevent the locking engagement of the catches particularly when both legs of a pair of trousers are placed in the device,
this being the preferred manner of using it, therefore I have found it desirable to provide the movable spring actuated pivotal hinge connection, whereby the pivot pin 28 ispermitted to move upwardly in the elongated slot 29, the strong tension spring holding the sections in firm yielding clamping engagement. v Y Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lctters Patent is: A
1. A portable pressing device 'comprising upper and lower sections each comprising'an outer shallow box like casing, an electrical heating unit encased within each section meansto clamp said sections in locked engagement upon a garment, and means to permit a limited yielding of said sections to compensate for the thickness of said garment.
2. A portable pressing device comprising upper and lower sections, each comprising a shallow box like casing, an electrical heating unit encased within each section, means having lost motion connections to pivotally connect said sections and means to clamp said sections in locked engagement upon a garment, said lost motion connections permitting limited movement of said sections to ,compensate for the thickness of said garment.
3. A portable pressing'device comprising upper and lowersections, each comprising a shallow box like casing, an electrical heating unit encased within each section, means to pivotally connect said sections including a pivot pin movable laterally to its axis, resilientv means-connected withv said pin to normally urge the pivotally connected side edges of said sections towards each other, and means to clamp the opposite edges of said sections in locked engagement upon a garment, said resilient means permitting limited movement of said pivot pin under tension to allow movement of said sections to compensate for the thickness of the garment while maintaining a clamping effect thereon.
4. A portable pressing device comprising upper and lower sections, each comprising a shallow box like casing, an electrical heating unit encased within said section, means having lost motion connections to pivotally connect said sections and means to clamp said sections in locked engagement upon a garment, said lost motion connections permitting limited movement of `said sections to compensate for the thickness of said garment, means to clamp the front edges of said sections in fixedl locking engagement upon a garment, and means to pivotally connect the rear edges of said sections comprising a housing fixed to one of said' sections and having an elongated slot therein, and a pivot pin carried by the other section slidably engaged in said slot to permit limited movement of said sections to compensate for the lthickness of said garment.
5. A portable pressing device comprising upper and lower sections, each comprising a. shallow box like casing, an electrical heating unit encased within each section, means having lost motion connections to pivotally connect said sections and means to clamp said sections in locked. engagement upon a garment, said lost motion connections permitting limited movement of said sections to compensate for the thickness of said garment, means to clamp the front edges of said sections i'n fixed locking engagement upon a garment, and means to pivotally connect the rear 'edges of said sections comprising a housing fixed to one of said sections and having an elongated slot therein, a pivot pin carried by the other section slidably engaged in said -slot and a spring having its ends secured to' said pivot pin and housing whereby limited movement of said sections under clamping tension will be permitted to compensate for the thickness of said garment.
