oscAn HAUPTMAN, or Nnw YORK, N. Y.
Piz-Essuie nnvrcn.
Application led August 28, 1922. .Serial No. 584,605.
T @ZZ whom t may concern.' o
Be it known that I, @scan HAUPTMAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a new and improved trousers pressing device especially adapted and constructed for domestic use. j
Another object is to incorporate .in such a structure an electrical heating `device adapted to be connected by the usual type of connecting cords to the Lcurrent supply such as used for lighting purposes.
A further object is to provide a portable structure which may be folded into a compact form so that it may be readily carried in an ordinary trunk or the like,y without taking up much space therein.
VAnother object is to provide'a device of this character with means to hold the pressing elements in clamped engagement and a Further object is to provide automatic means for completing the electric circuit through the heating elements when the device is folded into its operative position.
For the accomplishment of these and such further objects as will hereinafter be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this appertains the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention but it is to be understood that changes, variations 'and be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings` forming a portion of this I specification Fig. 1 is aperspective view of a trousers pressing device embodying my invention showing the device folded into operative position.
Fig.2isa elements with some of the parts broken away.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 35u-3 of F ig.,
2, and
Fig. 4 is a sectionaldetail of the automatic circuit closing device.
As shown in the drawings the device comprises an upper and lower'section 10 and modifications may plan view ofone of the pressing- 11 respectively, preferably hinged together as by the hinges 12 alone one of their longitudinal .meeting edges. Fach of the sections comprise an outer box-like casing 13 which may be constructed of wood or metal or any suitable material and which is provided with an inwardly projecting bead 111 adapted to engage and retain within the casing a pressing pad 15 preferably of felt. `The pad 15 is seated on a sheet 16 of asbestos or libre which is proportioned to fit neatly with the casing and a press cloth 17 is laid over the outer surface of the pad and has its ends folded under the sheet 17, the ends pref` erably being suitably secured to maintain the press cloth in a smooth condition.
An electrical heating unit consisting of a sheet of mica 18 andthe heating coil 19 is encased within the asbestos covering 2O and is placed between the pressing pad 15 and a heat insulating member 21 which rests against the bottom of the casing.
One end of the heating coil 1 9 of the upper section is connected with a separable plug connection 22 and its other end is connected with a metallic casing 23 suitably secured within the depending front wall of the upper section, it being understood that kthe casing 23 is suitably insulated from the casing if the casing is constructed of metal. Mounted within the casing 23 is a contact piece in the form of a plunger 25 having its lower end normally projected beyond the `casing by the spring 26 confined between the upper enlarged head 27 of the plunger and the casing 23. The projecting end of the plunger is adapted to entend into a recess 28 formed inthe front wall of the lower section 11 to contact with acontact plate 29 to which one end of the heating coil 19 of the lower section is suitably secured the other end of the lower coil being secured to aseparable plug member 22. Thewires 30 and 31 from the plug sections 22y and 22a arebrought together as indicated in Fig. land are preferably encased in an outer insulating sheath to form a connecting cordaccordingpto the usual practice, a socket plug being secured to the outer end of the cord for connection to any convenient source of current.
'Means are provided for clamping the upper and lower sections in engagement and comprise the hook members. suitably secured tothe upper section with which are adapted to be engaged the clasps 36 pivotally mounted in the levers 37, the levers t being piyoted as at to the l'naclfetr secured vto the lower section ll.
The operation et the device is as follows, the portions oi' a pair ot trousers are placed upon the press cloth 1 6 et the lower section ll and are thoroughly smoothed out by hand after which the pper section l() is swung' upon the hinges l2 to bring the upper press cloth in engagement with the trousers the clasps 36 are engaged with hoolas and the upper and lower sections are securely clamped tog ther.
As the upper section brought clamping' engagement with the lon section the i'ilungger 25 'will make Contact 'with ce iact plate 529 thus completing' the ecgric circuit through both. coils l) 'which are connected in series. the conducti inn been connected up to the cf,
The sheet lt is preterabljy.' constincted so as to be sligrltly yieldable to permit its removal troni the sections by spriusing` it laterally to clear the beads lll. 'thereby allowing the press cloth li' and pret-:sinnl pad 1G to be reneifed when fer necessary or desirable. flaps lo being' itached o each end of the sheet and extendine outwa ly beyond the casino; 'to provide means :tor removing the press pad and cloth, the 'tlaps beine4 centrally located at each end so as to cause the lateral springing'.
As the casings are thoroughly insulated against heat conduction the device may be placed upon table or any other article of furniture without any danger oft mari-ingr it and may be lett unattended without danuer of lire. The heating' coils are designed to produce sutlicient heat to press the trousers thoroughly and scorchinn` is preventedy by the intcrposition ot the asbestos covering); and sheet. The trousers may there- ;tore be lett in the device for any desirable length oit time. The clanuiingi` members 35 and 36 are designed to locithe sections together in such a way as to alert considerable pressure upon the articles placed between the sections and the pr: tal points of the connections of the clasps and lever 37 are arranged to pass a de:i d center so as to hold the clamps in engagement. l
It will be obvious that thev device could also be used 'tor pressing' articles other than trousers as 'tor ewrample: neclrties. sott collars or handkerchicts.
lWbile l have shown the upper and lower sections as being pivoted or hinged together it will be apparent that they could be made separaliile and clamping means such as shown could be provided alone; both of the longitudinal edges.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
