A. W. VOGELAAR I TOOL BOX Filed Nov. '7. 1921 Oct. 30 1923.
Patented st. 30, 1923. V
OFFICE ANTHONY 'WILLJIIAM. VOGELAAR, or BULYEA, SASKATCHEWAN. CANADA;
o root BOX.
Application filed November To all wlwm it may concern.
Beit known that I, ANTHONY WILLIAM Vomit/Ann, of the townof Bulyea, in the Province of saskatchewan, Canada, have mvented certain new and useful Improve ments in Tool Boxes, of which the following is the specification.
The inventionrelates to improvements in tool boxes and particularly to a toolbox for use on the poles or tongues of agricultural and such like implements and the'object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed toolbox which can be readily at tached to the tongue or similar support and which is arranged so that it can beaeasily and quickly adjusted to accommodate the tongue or pole on which it is to be applied. A further object is to construct a bottomless box fitted with a cover and with the cover and, box bodyarranged so that they can be adjusted in width to accommodate 7 p the width of the pole and thereby permit of the use of the box on various implements as occasion requires. p
lVith the above more important objects in view the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts here inafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claims, reference being hadto the accompanying draw ing in which Fig. 1 is a side view of the box as it appears mounted on and attached to the tongue or pole. p H
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the box.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view at 3-3 Figure 2.
P Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view at 4-4 Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view at 5-5 Figure 3.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detailed sectional view through the joint formed at one of the upper corners of the box. I
In the drawing-like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The body 1 of the box is substantially rectangular and comprises a back 2 and 50 front 3, the back being provided with end extensions 4: and 5 whilst the front is fitted with end extensions 6 and 7. The end extensions 4: and 5 have their upper and lower edges fitted with inturned flanges 8 and 9 7, 1921. SerialNo. 513,453.
which form, guides receiving slidably the uppe and lower edges of the end pieces 6 and r 7 I From the above arrangement it will be apparent that the front and the back of the box can be pulled apartor closed together whilst maintaining the ends of the box closed and this adjustment is made to accommodate the width of the box to the tongue, pole or suchlike 10 to which it may be attached.
Here it may be observed that the front and back of the box extend downwardly beyond the ends to-form attaching wings 2' and 3', which receive between them the upper side of the tongue. Actually the'tongue closes the bottom. of the box after'the same has been mounted thereon and adjusted in width to conform to the widthof the tongue.
The box body is held in place by removable.
The cover or lid'12 of the box is'formed from two slidably connected sections 13 and 14c, the ends of the sectionsbeing connected one to the other by the sliding joint. best shown inFigure 6. The rearedge of the top section is connected by a hinge 15 to the back of the box and the front edge of the under section carries a pivoted hasp 16 adapted to be caught by a spring catch 17 carried by the front of the box. 7 v
Coiled springs 18 extend between the cover and the back of the box, these springs having a natural tendency to hold the cover closed and as the upper ends of the said coiled springs are attached to the under section of the cover they have a natural tendency to c ose together the cover sections.
As before intimated it is an easy matter for a farmer to attach this box to any tongue or pole as he has simply to open it to fit the pole, then bolt it and afterwards when closingthe cover extend it to close over the body of the box. I
Whilst I have described the box as utilized particularly on a pole or tongue it will be understood that it can be set up on any support which will form a nautral bottom closing the bottom of the box and permits.
. ting of the bolting of the box to the support by the bolts 11.
What I claim as my invention is i '1. The combination with a tongue, pole or such like, of a substantially rectangular open bottomed box body mounted on the tongue and having theends of the box body bearing on the tongue and the front and back of the box body extending beyond the ends and embracing the sides of the tongue,"
bolts connecting the front and back of the box to the tongue and a pivoted cover attaohed toIthe box body. I is 1 i .2. The combination with a tongue, pole orisuch like, of a substantially rectangular open bottomed box body having expansible and contractible ends resting on the tongue and adjustable toaccommodate the width of the tongue and the front and back of the box body extending beyond the ends thereof ande'mbracing the sides of the tongue, means fastening the front and back of the applied box body to the tongue and an adjustable hinged cover for the box body.
3. An open bottomed substantially rectangular tool box having expansible and contractible ends and the front and back of'the box body projecting downwardly beyond the ends to provide attaching means and a cover hinged to the top of the box body and adjustable in width to accommo date the adjustment in width of the box body. 7 1 Y 4. An open bottomed substantially rectangular tool box having expansible and contractible ends and the front and back of the box body projecting downwardly beyond the ends toprovide attaching means and a cover pivotally attached to the box body, the said' 'cover being formed from two parts slidably connected together and permitting of the widening of the cover to accommodate an increase of width of the box body.
5. An attachment for vehicle tongues comprising a tool box provided with extending flanges disposed to lie on opposite sides of the tongue, said flanges being relatively adjustable to accommodate tongues of varying width therebetween.
6. An attachment for I vehiclev tongues comprising a tool box provided with extending flanges disposed to lie on opposite sides of the tongue, said box beingadjustable to vary the capacity thereof and to simultane-.
ously vary the distance between the flanges to accommodate tongues of varying width.
' 7. A tool box attachment for vehicle tongues, comprising side and end Walls, the said end walls being adjustable in length and said side walls being'extended downwardly beyond the end walls to provide attaching flanges disposed to lie on opposite sides of the tongue, the latter being utilized to form the bottom of the box.
8. The combination with a vehicle tongue of a tool box structure, comprising front, rear and end walls, said end walls comprising telescoping sections adjustable to'vary the effective capacity of the box, the front and rear walls being extended downwardly beyond the end walls; to form flanges disposed tolie on opposite sides of the tongue and adjustable with the front and rear walls ANTHONY WILLIAM VOGELAAR.
