wARnRoBE TnUnK Ann GAEMENr-HAN ER BRACKET THEREFOR.
Application filed April 5,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYDNEY OsrEnwEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wardrobe Trunks and- Garment-Hanger Brackets Therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters ofreferencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in trunks; and, the present invention relates, more particularly, to a novel arrangement and construction of bracket attachment for wardrobestr'unks, for the supporting of a number 'of garment-hangers upon saidbracket. i I i In applying thebracket-attachment to the wardrobe-trunk, the latter comprises the usual body-section, one end-portion of which is'open, and is provided with a hinged elementfo'r closing said open end-portion. of the said body-section, audthe entire body thus provided being adapted to be closed by means of a usual cover orlid-section, the said bracket-attachment being provided with a channelled attaching element or member which is adapted to be fitted over and upon the surroundingedge-portions of the said open end-portion of the'said body-section to suitably re-enforce and strengthen the open end portion of the said body-section, in a manner as will hereinafter more fully ap; pear.
The "present invention, therefore, has for A its principal object to provide a novel and and strengthen said open said body-section.
a said bracket being readily mounted over the 1921. Serial No. 458,776.
edge-portions of the parts which surround the vopen end portion of a body-section of a wardrobe-trunk, and the said bracket, if desired being easily lifted from its supported relation to the said open end-portion of the said body-section, to be suspended from nails or hooks in a closet or wall.
Other objects'of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be more fully understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
lVith the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists. primarily, in the novel garment-hanger bracket for wardrobe-trunks hereinafter set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
' The invention is clearly illustrated in'the accompanying drawings, in which z+ Figure l is a perspective view of a garment-hanger bracket showing one embodiment of the principles .of the present invention, said illustrating in connection therewith, and in dotted outline, portions of t-he open end-portion of the body-section of a wardrobe trunk, and of the usual hinged end-section-for closing said open end-section; and Figure 2 is a vertical sectional representation of thesaid hanger-bracket and the open end-portion of the body-section of the trunk, said section being represented as taken in a vertical plane on line 2-2 in said Figure 1. I
Figure 3 is a detail vertical representation taken on line 3-3 in said Figure 2; Figure 4 is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion. of the channelled supporting element or member of the bracket, and a portion of the body-section of the trunk, the supporting element being removably disposed upon the edge of the body-section, and being provided with a perforation for its suspension upon a nail or hook outside of the trunk-body.
Figure 5 is a perspective viewofone of the corners of the channelled supporting elementor member of the bracket; and Figure 6 is a vertical sectional representation of certain portions of the said garment hangerbracket, showing one manner of suspending the bracket upon a wall, when removed from the body-section of the trunk.
Figure 7 is in part a vertical sectional representation and perspective view of portions of the body-section and closing endsection of a wardrobe-trunk, said views showing a slight modification of the principles of the present invention.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views. to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the base or bottom, and 2 and 3 the longitudinally extending sides of the body-section of a wardrobe-trunk. to the open end-portion of which, shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, is suitably hinged the closing end-section 4:.
The said garment hanger-support consists, essentially, of a main supporting or attachin element, made of suitablechannel-iron, and comprising a rear member 5 and a pair of forwardly extending side- members 6 and 7, the said side- members 6 and 7 being, respectively, connected with the rear member 5, as at 8, and being cut away, as at 9, substantially as shown in Figures 1 and 5 of the drawings, and the entire device, when viewed from the top providing a U-shaped reenforcing strap adapted to be fitted upon and over the marginal edge-portions of the said rear member 5 and the said side- members 6 and 7. This strap, if desired, may be detachably mounted upon the said marginal edgeportions, by being slipped over the said edge-portions and held thereon by friction, as will be understood from an inspection of Figure 4 of the drawings, but, in the preferred construction, the members 5, 6 and 7 of the strap are made with suitably disposed holes or perforations, as 10, for the reception of trunk-nails 11, or other suitable fastenings, as rivets or .screws, for permanently securing said strap in place.
If desired, the said members 5, 6 and 7 may also be made with rib-shaped portions, as 12, forming tongues, which are fitted into corresponding grooves in the marginal edgeportions of the trunk-members l, 2 and 8, substantially as shown in Figure 7 of the drawings. In that case, if desired,-the closing end-section 1- of the trunk may also have secured to its marginal edge-portions, a U shaped strap 13, made of channel-iron, provided with a rib-shaped portion or tongue, as 14, which is adapted to be brought into interlocking registration with the depressed or grooved portions of the said rib-shaped portion or tongue 12, the purposes of which will be clearly understood from an inspection of said Figure 7 of the drawings.
The means for the suspension of the garment-hangers therefrom, consists, essentially, of suitably disposed and upwardly extending posts 15 which are suitably secured to the member 5 by means of rivets 16, or other suitable fastening means, suitably formed bracket-members 17 being also secured to the forward end-portions of the. respective members 6 and 7 by means of rivets 18, or other suitable fastening means. These bracket-members 17 are usually made U- shaped, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, and suitably secured to the respective posts 12 and the free end-portions of the bracket-members 17, are the forwardly extending rails 19, with which are slidably connected suitable extensions, as 20, for increasing the lengths of said rails, when the wardrobe trunk has been opened, and to slip the usual garment-supporting hangers from their more or less closely packed positions Within the body-section of the trunk, when it is desired to remove or replace a garment.
While I do not limit myself to the exact means of slidably connecting the extensions 20 with the rails 19, I have shown in Figures 1, 2 and 6 of the drawings, one means of thus producing'such slidable connection of the members 20 with the members 19. In that case, the rails 19 are made tubular, each rail 19 being provided in its lower portion with a longitudinally extending slot 21. The extensions 20 are made in the form of rods, the main portions of which are disposed within said tubular rails 19, each. rod being provided with a pin or projection, as 22, which extends into and is movably disposed in a slot 21. The forward end-portions of said rods 20, extend from the openends of the tubular rails 19, the free ends of said rods 20 bein provided with enlargements or knobs 23, which serve as fingerpieces, and also serve as stops to prevent the garment hangers fromaccidentally slipping off the ends of the said members of the hanger bracket thus provided.
When the U-shaped strap of the hangerbracket is simply slipped over the edge- portions 1, 2 and 8 of the body-section of the trunk, and is not permanently secured in place, as indicated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, the hanger-bracket may be removed from the trunk and suspended from hooks or nails, as 24, driven into a wall 25, see Figure 6, the main member 5 of said strap being provided with suitably disposed and suitably shaped openings, as 26, for the proper disposition of the hanger device upon such hooks or nails, as will be evident.
Of course I am aware that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are 1 ,aespaa appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A garment hanger-bracket for trunks comprising a channelled supporting element adapted to be mounted in embracing relation about the marginal edge-portions of the open end of the body-section of a trunk, and means extending from said supporting element for the suspension therefrom oi garment hangers.
2. A garment hanger-bracket for trunks comprising a channelled supporting element consisting of a rear member and a pair of side-members extending at right angles from said rear member, said rear member and said side members being adapted to be mounted in embracing relation about the marginal edge-portions of the open end of the bodysection of a trunk, and means extending from said rear member for the suspension therefrom of garment hangers.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of April, 1921.
