' WELL COVER.
APPLICATION FILED Nov. I9. 191B.

WELL-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 12, 1919.
Application :filed November 19` 1918. Serial No. 263.202;
To all whomt may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. MoDoN- ALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at London, in the county of Pope and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well- Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is primarily designed to protect wells and prevent the fouling of drinking water obtained from such source by the entrance into the well of dirt, toads, vermin and insects.
The invention has for its object to provide a cover which may be readily applied to a well curb or casing and which will prevent the entrance of foreign matter into the well to the detriment of the water contained therein.
The invention consists of a cover and means for attaching the cover to the curb and which at the same time will form a rest and stop to hold the cover in elevated position when thrown upward to admit of ready access to the well when it is required to obtain water therefrom.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure l is a view in elevation of the upper portion of a well curb or casing'provided with a cover embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the co-ver,
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the cover and attaching means showing the parts on a larger scale.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The numeral l designates the projecting portion of a well curb or casing which may be of tile or other formation. The cover 2 is preferably of metal and has a depending rim 3 to encircle the upper outer portion of the well curb and insure a close joint so as to exclude foreign matter such as dirt, vermin and insects from entrance into the well. The cover is hingedly supported and is provided opposite the hinged joint with a hand piece t which consists of a strap iron having one end riveted or otherwise fastened to the cover and its other end projecting offset and extended outwardly to be conveniently grasped when it is required to throw the cover into open position.
A `band 5 is adapted to be fitted to the upper portion of the well curb or casing 1 and consists of a metal strap bent into circular form or other shape to encompass the well curb and having its end portions extended outwardly and apertured to receive a bolt or fastening 6 by means of which the b-and 5 is clamped about the well curb and secured thereto. A bracket '7 projects rear wardly from the band 5 and is preferably disposed diametrically opposite the hand piece 4e and the outwardly extending ends of the band. The bracket 7 is in the forni of a loop and the inner ends of the side members are outwardly extended and secured to the band 5 in any manner. The bracket 7 constitutes a hinged member and a rest and stop.
A member 8 is secured at one end tothe cover 2 and its opposite end portion is inclined and terminates in an eye through which passes a pin 9, the latter serving to pivotally connect the member 8 to the bracket 7. The member 8 constitutes the companion hinged member and its lower rear end is disposed between the side members 0f the bracket 7. The inclination of the rear end of the member 8 is such as to admit of the cover 2 and band 5 occupying a relative parallel position when the parts areI properly secured to a well curb or casing.
In accordance with the invention the band 5 is clamped about the upper port-ion of the well curb and at such a distance from the top thereof as to admit of the cover 2 resting closely upon the upper portion of the curb. The cover is of such relative size as to admit of the depending rim 3 snugly encircling the upper end of the curb. l/Vhen it is required to gain access to the well to draw water therefrom the hand piece 4 is grasped and the cover 2 is thrown into open position and is held elevated by the member 8 engaging the rear closed end of the bracket 7 as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l. When the cover is closed it is retained in place by the depending rim 3 and the member 8 in conjunction with the band 5 as will be readily understood.
The foregoing description and the drawered the preferred, or aporoved, it'ornloifrny4 invention. It is to be un erstood that I may make such changes in costruction and rar-.-
rangement and combination of parts, ma
terial, dimensions, et cetl'a, as mayI prove' expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters .Patent is i In combination with well curb, a band encircling `the curb near the top thereof, means for clamping the band about the curb, a loop -fshaped' bracket projecting outwardly from the band, a cover closing the top of the curb,- a member projecting outwardly from the cover. and terminating between the longitudinal elements of the said bracket, and
means pivotally connecting the outer end of ysaid member with the longitudinal elements 4WlLLIAll/l B. MCDONALD.
