ARLAND H. ALLEN, OF RED WING, MINNESOTA.
EXTENSIBLE CANE, 84.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,715, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed October 28, 1 85. Serial No. 181,204. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARLAND H. ALLEN, of Red ing, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extensible Rods, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 isa detailedsectional view ofthe rod extended. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the end of the inner rod, and Fig. 4c is a side elevation showing the rod in use.
Similar letters indicate the same parts in the diii'erent figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide an extensible rod adapted to various uses, but
- more especially for closing the lids of outside burial-cascs alter the cases are lowered in the grave.
My invention consists in a hollow rod, preferably in the fOIlll of a cane, and a smaller tubular rod fitted thereto and provided with a folding hook, which may be folded entirely within the inner rod, so that it may be wholly concealed within the outer tubular rod.
The tube A,forining the body of the cane,is provided at the upper end with the usual head, B, and at the lower end with a flange or fillet, a, which is internally threaded. The tube A contains a tube, 0, having upon its inner end a collar, 1), and upon its outer end a cap, 6, which is threaded to fit t-hethread of the fillet (t. The end of the internal tube, 0, adjoining the cap (I is slotted, and the cap also is slotted, and in the slot of the cap or rod is pivoted the hook e,having near its pivot a shoulder, f, which engages a shoulder, on the tube() when the hook is unfolded in the'posithreaded cap, (I, and a hook, e, pivoted in the tion for use, as shown in Fig. 2. When the extensible rod is contracted, the inner tube, 0, is entirely concealed in the tube A,and is fastened therein by screwing the cap d into the fillet a, as shown in Fig. 1. \Vhen the rod is extended, the cap 03 is unscrewed from the fillet a in the end of the tube A and the tube 0 is drawn out,so that the collar b,attached to the inner end of the tube G,engages the fillet a in the end of the-tube A. The hook e is opened so that it forms a right angle with the tube 0,
as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
The out-side box or casing, D, in connection with which my extensible rod is designed to be used, is shown in its position in the grave in Fig. 4.
The lid of the box is closed by brin ing the hook 6 into engagement with a staple, h, projecting from the edge of the cover of the box, the cover being hinged to the box.
My improvement is not confined to this particular use, as it may be used for reaching and handling inaccessible objects in show-windows or show-cases, and in other places.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the tubular rod A, provided with an internally-t-hreaded fillet at one end, of the tube G,fittcd to the tube A, provided with a collar on its upper end, and having a threaded cap,d, secured to or formed upon the lower end of the said rod, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in an extensible rod,of a tube, A, an internal rod or tube, 0, fitted thereto and provided with a collar, b, at one end and a threaded cap, d, at the other end, and a hook, e, pivoted in the cap, substantially as herein specfied.
3. The combination, with a tube, A, provided with a head, B, and an internallythreaded fillet, a, of a rod, 0, fitted to the tube A and provided with a collar, b, and a cap, substantially as herein specified.
ARLAND H. ALLEN.
