DEVICE FOR PRODUCING RELATIVE TRANSLATIONAL MOVEMENT Filed An'ril 2O 1921 .[IZWIZZOr I I Z[a roZdZ I Patented Get. 2, 1923.
nEvIcn non Pnonncnve RELATIVE "rleansLArIonAn'lvrovnranivtr 1 To. all whom it concern: 7
Be it known that l, HAROLD Fee, a subject of theliing of Great Britain, 'residing in Billlngshurst, England, have invented cer 'I tain new and useful Improvements in De -vicesfor Producing" Relative Translational lvtovemcnt, of which the following isa speci fication.
This invention relates to mechanical devices such as adjustable spanners, Secateurs, bolts orv the like in whichit is desired to produ'ce relative translational movement be tween two members of the device, such relatively movable members as the fixed member and the movable member respectively, but it will be understood that either may be regarded as the fixed'member and the other as the movable member.
' According to the present invention the actuating lever is correlated with what may be regarded as the fixed'member'by means of r a pair of pin and slot connections, One slot 7 two elements of, the device is being formed in the fixed member in the required direction of relative movement and the other slot in the actuating lever in a direction at right anglesrwith the first mentioned slot or substantially so, and this double pin and slot connection between these an essential feature of the" present invention.
In theaccompanying drawings Fig-.1 is
an elevation partly in section of 'an automatically adjustable spanner embodying the invention; Fig. 2 isaside elevation of same 1 Fig, 3 a detached partelevation of the actuating lever; Fig. 4 an elevation with lever removed showing the remaining parts in another relative position; Figs. 5 and6 detached elevations of the spanner jaws; and Fig. 7 a perspectivev view of a modification,
this latter construction being particularly applicable to pliers and'secateurs. r ,t Referring first to Figs. 1-6, a and b are the two jaws of the spanner which have slots a. Z) respectively parallel with each other and with the direction of relative movement of the jaws. A pin a carried by the mov Application filed April 20, 1921 Serial No. 462354.,
forks, and the other, viz. Z2
or latch of a door. I members may be arranged so that this same I portion would form the. lifting member of a ablef jaw a engagesslot b ditional guiding means for; movement are provided in a rib-1a sliding in a groove Z2 in jawb. I
The actuatinglever 0 is bifurcated; at its head to embrace both jaws which i HAROLD nee, "or isrrmnesnnns'r, ENGLAND; "i

ably suitablyyrecessed to accommodate the? forks of 'the lever flush with faces and the plns of, IF pass their cuter? through the 7 forks, one of-them, vizgpin a in the'drawings, fittingeasily in'clrcular holes 0 in the in the drawings, fitting easily into a slot 0 in the forks running at right angles to the direction of the slots a, b in thejaws.
lnthe construction of Fig. 7 the fixed jaw gis formed with a slot 9 extending in the 'Y direction of the required relative movement, a pin it passing through this slot and through holes in x of the actuatinglever The latter is correlated with the jawg by means of a ping? in,a handle extension. q
of the jaw g which engages a slot 71'; in the actuating lever, .this slot'being, as shown in jawfi and iii-the embracing l forks i in the head the drawings, substantially at right angles to slot 0.
It will be obviousthat many modifications may be made, infaccordance with the purpose to be served, in the actual construction of apparatus such as contemplated inthe i present invention without exceeding the scope thereof. For example, 1F 1g. 7 the two members 9, it, may be modireferring to fied so that a horizontally'projectingportionof the movable-j aw would'form thebolt jack. y I
Having thus described the nature of the said, invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claim:
1. In mechanical devices, able spanners or thellike in ment of two members of thedevice by means of an actuating handle or lever, a double'pin and slot connection correlating theactuatsuch as adjust- 1 i which it is de-gy sired toproducejrelative translationalmove-fi In the same way the" ing lever withone ofthe relatively movable members comprising a'slot in said member all ed in the required, direction of relative motion andi cooperating with a pin in the said lever, and a slot in'the actuatingf'handle and one jaw or'lever aligned substantially at right angles to the slot in the aforesaid member and cooperating with a pin in said member, sub stantially as described.
1 2. An adjustable spanner Or the like comprising two relatively movable aws and an actuating lever, guiding means on the jaws, a pin fitting in aligned holes in the said lever and passing through a slot in the second jaw and a pin in the latter jaw passing through a slot in the lever, said slot being aligned substantially'at right angles to the first mentioned slot, substantially as described. 7
3. An adjustable spanner or the like, cornprising-two relatively movable jaws and an actuating lever, a pin fitting in aligned holes; in said lever and one jaw and passing through a slot in the second jaw aligned in the required direction of relative motion, a
passing through slots in the second pin carried by the second ja-w and 7 first jaw and in the lever aligned at right angles to each other, substantially as described.
4; An adjustable spanner or the like, comprising two relatively movable jaws and an actuating lever correlated by pin and slot connections, guiding means on the jaws, a pin fitting in aligned holes in said lever and one jaw and passing through a slot in the second jaw parallel with aforesaid. guiding means, a second pin carried by the second jaw and passing through a' slot in the first jaw also parallel with said guiding means and through a slot in the lever at right angles to the other slots, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificati0n.-
nARoLn nee.
