BOLT OR SPIKE FULLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1919.
Application filed February 8, 1919. Serial No. 275,740.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. CLAYPooL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of East St. Louis and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt or Spike Pullers, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, references being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bolt and spike pullers and has for its object the construction of a tool for pulling bolts and spikes which are used in bridge building, ship yards, railroad work, etc.

This invention is an improvement on the invention set forth and described in a patent granted to me June 18, 1918, Number 1,269,688.
Referring to the drawings: 4 indicates a spike puller which is provided with the usual bifurcated jaws 5 which is to be inserted under the bolt or spike for starting the same. Mounted in the heel of the spike puller is a shaft 6 on which are mounted rollers 7 Mounted on the shank of the spike puller is a U-shaped frame 8 having depending arms 9, said arms being pivoted on a bolt 10 passing through the shank of the spike puller. The ends of the bifurcated jaws 5 on the top surfaces are slightly flattened on which the frame 8 rests, that is to say, the top surfaces of the jaws 5 form a support for the frame, when the device is not in use, and when in use, in the operation of pulling a bolt, these jaws will form bearing points for the frame.
Mounted in the frame 8 on a bolt 11 is a gripping jaw 12 and mounted in the forward end of the frame on a bolt 13, is a similar gripping jaw 14. The bolt 13 is mounted in inclined slots 15 and is adjustable for dif ferent diameters of bolts, that is to say, it may be adjusted to and from the jaw 12, so that it is adapted to be used for pulling different diameters of bolts. This adjustment is effected by means of a set screw 16 mounted in the forward end of the frame 8.
The jaw 14 rests on a pin 17 passing through the frame and is spring held by means of a spring 18 which is mounted on a pin 19 passing through the frame 8. The end 20 of said spring rests on the top face of the jaw as illustrated in Fig. 2 and the oppo site end of the spring 21 rests against the end 22 of the frame. By this construction the jaw 14 is spring pressed against the bolt in the operation of pulling the same.
The U-shaped frame 8 is pivoted slightly below the axis of the shaft 6 on which the rollers 7 are mounted and is disposed substantially in a horizontal position. In the operation of pulling the bolt, the rollers 7 act as a fulcrum point and in the act of pulling, as the jaws 5 and frame 8 move upwardly and the operating handle 23 moves downwardly, the fulcrum point formed by the rollers 7 will move in toward the bolt and give almost a vertical pull on the bolt and prevent it from bending or binding against the side of the hole in which the bolt is located.
In the device previously patented to which reference has been made, it was rather difiicult to pull the bolt and it was impossible to prevent it from bending, because the fulcrum point would not move toward the bolt in the act of pulling. By employing the rollers 7 which form a movable fulcrum point and pivoting the frame 8 slightly below the axis of the shaft on which the rollers are mounted, I have overcome this defect.
It will be observed that the adjustable jaw 14 is mounted on a shaft movable in inclined slots 15. This is for the purpose of maintaining the biting edge of said jaw in its different adjustments substantially fin line with the biting edge of the jaw 12, so that said jaws grip the bolt at substantially diametrically opposite points.
The rollers 7 not only form a movable fulcrum point as previously pointed out, but also act as a convenient means for moving the puller from one position to another.
The vertical movement of the jaw 12 is limited by a pin 24 passing through the jaw and the ends projecting into openings 25 of greater diameter than the pin, the openings 25 being formed in the sides of the U-shaped frame 8.
Having fullydescribed my invention what I claim is:
1. A bolt puller comprising an operating handle, jaws mounted on the lower end thereof, rollers mounted in the rear of said jaws, a U-shaped frame mounted above said jaws and pivoted in advance of the rollers, a gripping jaw mounted in said frame adjacent the said jaws, a pin mounted in said gripping jaw and located in an opening formed in the side of said U-shaped frame for limiting the vertical movement of said jaw, a spring pressed and adjustable jaw mounted in the forward end of the U- shaped frame, and a set screw for adjusting the spring pressed jaw relative to the first mentioned jaw.
2. A bolt puller comprising an operating handle, a bifurcated jaw formed on the lower end thereof, a shaft mounted in the lower end of the said handle, rollers mounted on said shaft, a U-shaped frame pivoted in advance of the rollers and below the axis thereof, a gripping jaw mounted in the rear end of said frame, a shaft mounted in the forward end of the frame, a spring pressed and adjustable gripping jaw mounted on said shaft, and a set screw mounted in the forward end of the frame for adjusting the adjustable jaw or different diameters of bolts.
3. A bolt puller comprising an operating handle provided with a bifurcated jaw, a roller support for said handle, a U-shaped frame pivotally secured to the lower end of the handle in advance and below the axis of the roller support, said frame being provided with inclined slots, a shaft mounted in said slots, an adjustable and spring held jaw mounted on said shaft, a set screw seated against the face of said jaw for adjusting the same, a pin mounted below said jaw for supporting the same, and a jaw mounted in the rear end of the framework.
