To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLIE LnoIrNni-i, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the parish of St. Mary and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Nail and Spike Extractor, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a tool and more particular-1v to one designed for the extraction of nails, spikes and allied articles, and aims to provide a novel device of that character having powerful and etfective means to accomplish the ends desired.

In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the preferred embodiment of my invention hasbeen shown, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved nail and spike extractor. 2 is a fragmental view illustrating in section the base and contiguous parts.

Referring to the drawings in which simi lar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. a base 3 is provided at its rear extremity with the upstanding ears 4 and with a second pair of ears 5 spaced there in front.

The forward or front extremity of the base is beveled so as to form the wedge shaped end 6 into which extends the rearwardly projecting slot 7 for the reception of the shank of a nail or spike during the process of the nail or spike extraction.

The movable jaw 8 is wedge-shaped at its forward extremity and is rovided with the nail ennan'ing slot 9 extending therein which lies directly above the slot 7 of the stationary jaw or wedge-shaped end 6 of the base. The movable jaw is angular or L-shaned and is pivoted at its elbow to the spaced ears 5 through the intervention, or by means. of the pivot pin 10.

An actuating lever 12 is rotatably secured to the ears 4 by the pivot p n 13, it being thus mounted for limited oscillatory motion, which motion will produce or accomplish the extraction of the nail which is at that time in engagement with the nail receiving slot 9. The lever 12 is provided with a pluralitv of apertures 14 to which is, adjustablv secured the links 15. The links are mounted for adjustable and pivotal engagement with the lever 12 while the opposite extremities are pivotally secured to the upstanding arm 11 of the movable jaw.

The actuating lever 12 provided at its upper extremity with the socket 17 in which 153 removably mounted the handle "8. it being noted, however, that the socket is for the face 20 which lies directly beneath the lever 12, and thus prevents the slipping or accidental displacement of the tool when pres sure is brought to bear upon the handle, such as is necessary for the extraction of a nail or spike or other use of the iinplcn'icnt. among the many and desirable features of the present device. particular mention is made of and stress laid upon the wedged manner in which the front extren'iity (3 and movable are formed. The formation in question allows the device to be used as a wedge for the prying apart of two objects. An actuation of the handle will then result in the further separation of the two articles, which thus takes the place of a crow-bar or allied tool when either limited space or other reasons negotiate the use of the latter. The linked and adjustable manner in which the movable jaw is connected to the lever 19., provides for the variation of the lever ratio between the n'iovements of the movable jaw and the actuating handle. Thus should a long stroke be desired, the link is shifted away from the fulcrum of the actuating lever which accomplishes the desired result. However, should it be desired to shorten the stroke of the movable jaw or to increase the force or turning moment of the same with the application of equal forces upon the handle. the same may be accomplished. with facility by lowering the lin c. brine;- ina the one extren'iity thereof closer to the fulcrum or pivot pin 13 of the lever.

Having thus fullv describ d in invention and referred specificall i to e al of the advantages thereof, what T d l e to procure by Letters Patent and claim is:

An extractor embodying an elongated shoe having; a wedQ'e-shaped claw at its for ward end and flush with its lower surface, an open slot extending from the rear end of the shoe to the butt end of said claw, a pair of upstanding ears at the rear end of the shoe at the opposite sides of said slot, and a pair of upstanding ears at the opposite sides of said slot adjacent the butt end of said claw, said claw having an open U-shaped slot extending from its sharp end, an angular lever having its elbow fulcruined between the second mentioned pair of ears and working in the first mentioned slot, one arm of said lever being in the form of a wedgeshaped claw adapted to swing snugly upon the first mentioned claw and having an open V-shaped slot above said U-shaped slot of the first mentioned claw, the other arm of said lever projecting upwardly, a power lever having its lower end fulcrumed between the first mentioned pair of ears and working in the first mentioned slot, and a link connecting the upwardly projecting arm of the angular lever with the power lever, the lower surface of the shoe being toothed at opposite sides of the first mentioned slot adjacent the rear end of the shoe.
