NITE il@ ALEXANDER DETTIVIANN, OF JUDSON, NORTH DAKOTA.
NAIL-EXTRACTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER DETT- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Judson, county of Morton, and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to nail or tack extractors and has for its obj ect the production of a tool of this character which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in a tool characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and more particui larly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a nail extractor' embodying the preferred form of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof taken at the point of pivotal connection between the arms thereof.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the device comprising cooperating arms Q and 3 which are pivotally connected together adjacent their outer eX- tremities by a pivotal pin 4. The outer grasping or jaw-forming ends 5 of said arms are, as seen, bent downwardly to a position at substantially right angles to the body .1, the inner or contacting surfaces of said ends adjacent their lower extremities being recessed as at 6 for the reception of the head of a nail or tack. Interposed between the rearward handle-forming ends 7 of said arms is a leaf spring 8, one end thereof being secured, preferably by a rivet 9, to the arm 3. Said spring is so arranged and tensioned as to adapt the same to normally hold said handle-forming ends separated, and hence the forward jaw-forming ends 5 in open-position or ready for the reception of a nail or tack head between the same.
IJivotally mounted upon the under side of the body 1, the same being secured in position by the pin 4f which is extended so'as to pass centrally therethrough, is a bifurcated member 10. Mounted in said member Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 14, 1910.
Patented Oct. 4, 1910.
serial No. 543,875.
10, the same being secured therein by a pin 11 which extends between the opposing ears 12 of said member, is a horizontally disposed block 13, the latter being preferably roundc d1 or semi-cylindrically formed at its under sic e.
ith a device of a construction as set forth, the extraction of a nail or tack will be a comparatively easy undertaking. Vith this device, a fulcrum is afforded by the block 13, and which, because of its relative proximity to the jaws 5, when the device is in use, will evidently result in such a leverage as will assist in the ready extraction of a nail or tack.
IVhile I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts described without departing from the spirit of the invention comprehended within the scope of the appended claims. And although I have designed my device with special reference to nails or tacks, the same may be used in any other capacity or for any other purpose to which it is applicable.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A nail extractor comprising pincers having jaws disposed at an angle to the body thereof and perforated for pivoting together; a fulcrum block provided with a perforation registering with said jaw perforations; and a pivot secured through said perforations, substantially as described.
2. A nail extractor comprising pincers having jaws disposed at an angle to the body thereof and perforated for pivoting t0- gether; a bifurcated member provided with a perforation registering with said jaw perforations; a pivot secured through said perforations; and a laterally elongated fulcrum block secured in the bifurcation of said member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALEXANDER DETTMANN.
