AUGUST S. HELD, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO STOVER MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS. l
MOP-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,31 5, dated May` 6, 1902. Application filed January 4, 1902. Serial No. 88,46 7. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST S. HELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of improved heads for holding niops; and it consists of certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts especially devised to that end, all as hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, Figure l is a top plan View of a mop-head einbodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section of t-he mop-head shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a side view of the mop-head in central longitudinalvertical partial section.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A is a mop-stick.
B B represent a casting comprising an npper clamping-jaw and a transverse socket adapted to admit and freely slide on the lower end portion of the mop-stick A. The socket B' has a longitudinal slot B2 therein, into which a pin B3, set iirmly into the stick A, projects to prevent thejaw B from becoming detached therefrom.
C is a'fulcrurn extending through and fixed in the stick A.
D is a bifurcated lever connected by its furcations D with the ends of the xed fulcrum C.
E is a counterpart lower clamping-jaw parallel with the upper jaw B, having its ends E' E2 extending and converging rearwardly and pivotally connected with the lever D at its mid-portion.
F is a coiled spring encircling the socket B', compressiblebetween the lower jaw B and the fulcrum C and normally acting to 'force such upper jaw B toward the lower jaw E.
Fig. 3 shows the lever D thrown forward and the lower jaw E moved thereby away from the upper jaw B, so as to permit the introduction ofa mop G between them. The leverD may thereafter be forced downl against the action of the spring F to the position shown in Fig. 2, where such spring F is shown compressed between the jaw B' and the fulcrum C and by reason of such compression holding the upper jaw B tightly against the intervening mop G and lower jaw E.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is-
In a mop-head, in combination, a stick, a casting comprising an upper clamping-jaw and a transverse socket adapted to admit and freely slide on the lower end portion of the stick, a fulcrum extending through and iixed in the stick, abit'urcated lever, connected by its furcations, with the ends of the fulcrum, a counterpart lower clamping-jawparallel with the upper jaw-havingits ends extending and 'converging rearwardly and pivotally connected with the mid-portion of the lever, and means for slidably connecting the socket of the upperjaw with the stick, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST S. HELD.
