Description

L. BABOS.
WRENCH.
D AUG.'24, 1914 Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
LACEY BA BOS LACEY BABos, 'OF WINSLOW, WASHINGTON.
. WRENCH, y
Specification 'of Letters Patent. Patentdec Application filed August 24, 1914. Seral NO. 858,301.
TO aZZ wlom Z'Z mag Concern:
Be it known that I, LACEY BABOS, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at VVinslow, in the County of Kitsap and State of Washington, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches and particularly to that type known as pipe wrenches, and has for its object the production of a wrench simple in construction at a minimum cost, and one which is not Only readily manipulated, but which at the same time is not liable to get out of order.
lVith these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement hereinafter more fully described.
In Order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may know how to make and use my improved wrench, I will proceed to describe the same referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing in which,
F igure 1 is an elevation looking at the front edge of the wrench, the handle being partly broken away, Fig. 2 is a central section taken on line C[ 0 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a detail side view showing the operative relation of the two jaws.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
1 is the operating handle terminating at its upper extremity in an angularly disposed fixed jaw 2, the juncture of the rear edge of the jaw with the handle seen at 3 constituting a fulcrum as will be hereinafter eX- plained.
4: is a movable jaw provided on its rea edge with minute serrationspreferably of about of an inch, and with a forward projection or beak 6 adapted to overlap the extremity of the fixed j aw as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
7 is a sleeve adapted to embrace the handle and the movable jaw and formed on the interior surface at the back with serrations 8 similar to the serrations 5 on the back edge of the movable jaw 4. The front of this sleeve is inclined to form a space 9 between it and the edge of the handle for the purpose of receiving a spring 10 and also to permit the necessary vibration of the handle and movement of the sleeve. The handle is the end of the spring may be secured to the handle below the sleeve and with its free end eXtended upwardlv `into the space 9, in an obvious manner. This spring, as clearly appears, holds the handle and movable jaw in any adjusted relation by reason of the intermeshing of the serrations 5 and 8, and when it is desired to release this fixed relation between the two members, it is Only necessary to press the sleeve against the spring 10 which will cause the back of the sleeve to move out of contact with the serrated edge of the jaw 4, the pin 12 being free to travel in the Curved slot 11.
Becurring to the handle 1 with its fixed jaw 2, the extremity of the latter is on a` curve the center of which is the fulcrum 3, and this curved surface is serrated as shown in order that a firm hold may be taken upon a pipe. When power and leverage are applied to the handle it Vibrates on the fulcrum 3, and moves upon the pin 12 .in the slot 11 thus firmly grasping a pipe located between the beak of the jaw 46, and the serrated extremity of the fixed jaw 2.
In applying the wrench to a pipe to be turned, the sleeve 7 is as before stated pressed against the spring whereupon the two jaws mav in an obvious manner be adjusted with reference to the pipe. and when the sleeve is released the spring 10 will cause the rear side of the sleeve to embrace the movable jaw and hold it in fixed position. The pipe being now confined between the two jaws and the handle used as a lever having a fulcrum 3, the pipe is firmly gripped and readily turned. v
From the construction shown and 'described it Will be seen that my improved ufactured, and expeditiously assembled, and 'that the several parts are nterchangeable if they should become unduly worn OI' broken.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A pipe wrench comprising a handle terminating in an angularly disposed fixed jaw, the juncture between the handle and jaw J constituting an angular fulcrum, Said handle on the back of the movable aw, and inclined at its front to constitute a space between it and the handle, the handle and sleeVe connected by a pin passing from the sleeve through the curved slot in the handle; and a spring attached to the handle and with its free end located in the space between the handle and sleeve and bearing against the sleeve, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
- In testimo'ny whereof I hereunto affix my ignature in the p'esence of two witnesses. LACEY BABOS. l/Vtnesses:
