GEORGE W. A-NSLEY, 0F SPOKANE, WASHNGTON HAMMER ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Grosor. lV. ANSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and lisetul Improvements in Hammer Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in nail extracting devices for attachment to hammers, etc., and consists in the provision essentially of a hammer head having a slot therein with inclined walls in which the shankl portions of claw members are adapted to be pivotally mounted and so arranged that, when the claws are brought into engagement with a nail and the handle of the hammer thrown in the act ot' drai. ing the nail, the jaws will be caused to securely clamp the nail and extract the same. l l
The' invention comprises various details of construction andcombinations and arrangements of parts which will be`hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying dra-wings and then specifically delined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation. Fig.V 2 is a View showing the claws removed. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the claws, and Fig. 4: is an end view showing the claws held together. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View of the device.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, 'A designates the hammer head having a socket portion B. Said head is provided with a slot D, the opposite walls D of which are inclined to each other. Said walls are apertured at F, and H, H designate two jaws, each having a shank portion K, the outer-faces of which K- are inclined and terminating in shoulders L. Said sha-nk portions are apertured at 0 for the reception of the pin which is adapted to be passed through registering apertures in the walls of the head and said shank portion and forming a pivotal conspecification of Letters Patent.

nection between the jaws and head. The
adjacent faces of each jaw are provided with serrations Q and said edges are inclined.
S is a spring arranged to press the jaws outward in the slot.
When the parts are adjusted in place, the jaws of the hammer are placed on either side of the nail and made to contact therewith and, when the handle of the hammer is swung in one direction, it is adapted to cause the inclined faces ofthe jaws to have ya wedging action against the inclined'walls of the slot, thereby throwing the serrated edges of the jaws rictionally against the nail and gripping the same securely. A reverse movement to the handle will cause the jaws to release their grip upon the nail. By the provision of a hammer made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that a simple and efficient means is adorded whereby a nail may be securely and positively gripped to hold the nail while being extracted and easily and conveniently released when the nail is withdrawn.
Attention is called to the fact that the free exposed ends of the jaws permit them to engage a nail placed adjacent a perpendicular surface as at a corner of a room which they could not it the slotted head projected beyond thejaws. The extension of the jaws inward beyond the nail engaging hollow portion .thereof lessens the leverage upon the pivot of the tilting out ac-l tion ,of the jaws in drawing a nail. Whatl claim to be new is 1. L nail extracting'device having a head with a curved 'ulcrum forming surface hav-l ing a slot running in from one end, jaws having reduced portions or arms pivoted to said head and each other at their inner ends at the inner end of said slot, the body, of
ing a slot running in from one end, inzws hnying reduced portions or mns piyotd to said hood sind euch other at then innei1 ends at the inner end of said siot, the 1ooly of said jaws extending from the end -Of the bend and forming nail drawing claws with exposed free ends, the outer faces of said jaws and the Walls of said slot being inclined so that outward movement of thejws through the slot 'tends to press the jews toward euch other, the inner faoes of the norme-i Cian' part of die jow being holiowed ont ie forni nail pinching edges which do not eri"- tend any substantial diszlnee into Une sieb of the head, and :L spx-ing tending to prese the jaws outward in the slot.
l n testimony whereof I hereumo znLHX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
f GEORGE W. ANSLEY. l
