ATTORNEY Patented July 1, 1924.
JOSEPH M. SEDIVEC, OF MAY, IDAHO.
COTTER-PIN EXPANDER AND FULLER.
Application filed August 14, 1923. Serial m. 657,293.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn'. M. SEnIvEc, a citizen of the United States, residing at May, in the county of Lemhi and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cotter-Pin Expanders and Pullers, of which the following is a specifi' cation.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for expanding and pulling cotter pins. I
The object is to provide a device of this character embodied in a single tool which may be readily handled by one hand and manipulated to spread or expand-the split end of a cotter pin so as to retain the same in place, the device being readily introduced into active position and by the simple pressure of the hand, as in the operation of ordinary pliers, ca used to function in the desired manner, 4
Another object is to provide a tool that may be easily and quickly applied in position for extracting or pulling the cotter pin from its position at the end of a bolt or else where.
A full and complete-understanding of the invention may be obtained from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, it being understood that while the drawing shows a practical form of the invention, the latter is not to be confined to strict conformity with the showing thereof,
but may be changed or modified, so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention, as specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the im proved cotter pin expander and puller; and Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
i The general formation andv shape of the improved device is similar to an ordinary pair of pliers, such as are in common use, the principal difierence residing in the fact that the pressure of .the hand, in. the present device, causes a separation of the active till jaws, whereas, in the case of the pliers the reverse is true, the jaws of the same being 1 1596, to approach each other i h m re pressure of the hand.- p Y To .secure this desired coac'tion of the aws, the devlce comprises a pair of sinuously curved levers 1, each terminating, at-
one end in outwardly diverging, curved handles 2, having their outer surfaces round ed and knurled as at 3, so as to bereadily,
grasped and operated by the thumb and fingers of one hand without injury thereto.
At an intermediategioint pf gell lengths,
in t io essto msthe levers are reduce vide opposite, interfitting recesses 4, w ich or less force depending on the amount of fit each other when the levers areplaced in operative relation toeach other, and thus provide a uniform thickness of the tool throughout its length, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
Adjacent tothe handle portions of the levers, each is provided with any enlarged,
circular .bearingdisc or plate 5, having alined perforations for the reception of a pivotal bolt 6,the said discs, as well as the opposite inner faces of the recesses-4 fitting fiat against each other when the levers are operated.
Each
lever, at its intermediate 1 portion, 1 where provided withtherecess 4, is out' wardly bowed and provided with a return bend, and the recessed bowed portions cross each other and terminate in elongated taper- 4 ing jaws 7,"which are of the full.w1dth' of the levers and are in vertical alinement with each other, so that their opposed, flat inner surfaces 8 fit fiat against'each other in the same manner asthe active jaws of an ordinary pair of pliers. It will be-noted that the levers cross each other at two points, and at the first crossing handles are fulcrumedto'get er.
The lips 9 of the jaws are ta cred down to a chiseledge extending the widthof the jaws, and are thus adapted to be readily introduc 'between the a j a cotter-p n-, as clearly shown in Figure of the drawin and it will be scent at a pressure on towards each other, the jaws 7 are cause separate, by reason-of the double crossingo 106 the levers, which brings about theforcing apart of the said ends 10 of the cotter pin to cause the same to be retained in its pos1- tion. v
A preferably .U-shaped leaf sp ring 12 is. located between the handle 2, wlthitsbent 1.10
oint from' the acent ends 10 of.
1 y e handles 2 to force the same.
portion adjacent to the opposite discs and the terminals of said spring located adjacent the ends of said handles, so that the tendency of the spring is to cause a separation of the handles, the result being to hold the jaws in contact with each other, so that no action of the hand of the operator is position in the aperature of the .bolt 11, such pulling action causing the spread ends of the cotter pin tobe forced together suiliaws having flat inner .faccs abutting each cientlyto permit thepin to be extracted.
In order to'prevent "the leaf spring .12 from becoming dislodged from its position between thelever's, a rivet 15 is preferably applied'to one of its terminals to secure the same to the adjacent inner face .of the jaw.
""Eronr the foregoing it will be seen that a simple, cheaply manufactured." strong and durable device has been provided for applying and removing cotter. pins, and which dles, said levers being outwardly bowed at hand being'directed in a manner may be readily operated by one hand for the purpose, the entire. gripping force of the to force the ends of the said pins apart.- It will be also seen that the hook 13 may be readily engafged in. the eye of the cotter pin, the latter turned so that the lips of the jaws may bear against the nuts when the device may be used in the manner o'f-a lever of the first class to pull the'cotter pin out of its seat;
What is claimed is 1-. A cotter .pm expanding device, comprising a pair of'sinuously curved levers,
or some other adjacent part,
said spring means. the extremities of the jaws being tapered to an edgeextending the full width of the jaws.
,\ cotter pin expander comprising a pair of intermcdiately fulcrumed levers having diverging handles at one end, a spring for normally scparating'said handies, said levcrs being outwardly bowed at one side of the fulcrum and having return bends tcrn'iinating in elongated, tapered other, and chisel-edge lips, said levers each,
having interfitting recesses where they cross each other to provide a tool of uniform width.
- 3. A cotter pin expander and pullef-comprising a pair of intermediately fulcrumed levers having diverging handles at one end, a spring for normally separating said hanone side oi the fulcrum and having return bends terminating in elongated, tapered jaws having fiat inner faces abutting each other, and chisel-edge lips, said levers each having interlitting recesses where they cross each other to provide a tool of uniform width, and one of said jaws having a longitudinally disposed hook to engage the eye of a cotter pin for extracting the same.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto ailixed my signature.
I JOSEPH M. SEDIVEC.
