UNTTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST S. IIELD, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO STOVER MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
MOP HEAD.
SEECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,813, dated May 6, 1902. Application filed January 4,1902. Serial No. 88,465. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST S. HELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of improved heads for holding mops; and it consists of certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts especially devised to that end, all as hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
which form apart of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a mop-head embodying my invention, parts of the central portion of the same being sectioned away to better show the interior construction thereof. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section of a complete mop-head holding a mop with all the parts thereof in working position and relation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the mophead.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. A is the lower portion of a mop-handle.
B B B are the combined fixed clampingj aw, the transversely-slotted spring-chamber, and the handle-socket of the mop-head, the same being formed by casting in a single piece and having transverse slots B extending through the walls of the spring-chamber portion B thereof. A rivet 13' or other suitable means may be employed to secure the socket B to the stick A.
O is a fulcrum extending through and adapted to slide in and lengthwise of the slots B in the chamber 13.
D is a spring inclosed in the chamber B and normally acting to force the fulcrum O from the fixed jaw 13.
E is a bifurcated lever connected by its fur-cations E with the ends of the slidable fulcrum O.
F is a counterpart movable clamping-jaw parallel with the fixed jaw B, having its ends F F extending and converging rearwardly and pivotally connected with the lever E at its mid-portion. I
Fig. 3 shows in dotted lines the lever E thrown clear forward and the movable jaw F moved thereby away from the fixed jaw B, so as to permit a mop G to be inserted between them. The lever E may next be freely swung back to the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 3 and thereafter be forced down against the action of the spring D to the position shownin Fig. 2, where said spring D is shown compressed between the lower end of the chamber B and the slidable fulcrum O and by reason of such compression holding the jaw F tightly against the intervening mop G and stationary jaw 13.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p In a mop-head, in combination, a handle, a casting comprising a fixed clamping-jaw; a transversely-slotted spring-chamber; and a handle-socket, a fulcrum, extending through, and adapted to slide in and lengthwise of, the transverse slots in the spring-chamber, a spring, inclosed in such chamber and normally acting to force the fulcrum from the fixed jaw, a bifurcated lever, connected, by
its furcations, with the ends of the fulcrum,
a counterpart movable clamping-jaw, parallel with the fixed jaw, having its ends extending and converging rearwardly and pivotally connected with the lever, at its mid-portion, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST S. IIELD.
