Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1907.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Fnnnnre HERMAN MAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manhattan, in the county of Riley and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in lifters arranged particularly for supporting a series of alined unconnected bodies, as brick or the like.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a lifter constructed to be readily and conveniently applied to a series of brick and adapted to actually engage only the end bricks, the specific arrangement of the parts of the lifter insuring sufficient pressure against the end bricks to thereby support the intermediate bricks.
The invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the construction and application of my improved lifter, Fig.
2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3.is a detail ele; vation of one of the bearing plates.
Referring particularly to the drawings, my improved lifter comprises a connecting bar 1 having terminal depending portions 2, constructed to provide spaced cars 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Clamping levers 4 are pivotally supported in each of the depending portions 2 of the bar 1, said levers being of identical construction and each formed with a pivot bearing 5 to receive a pivot pin 6 connecting the ears 3.
The levers 4 are preferably of approximate L-shape having the terminals of their shorter arms enlarged and flattened to provide bearing plates 7. The inner ends of each of the levers are disposed in spaced relation and are each flattened to provide sections 8 centrally formed with openings 9. A handle frame 10 including a gripping portion 11 and depending side bars 12 is arranged for cooperation with the levers 4, the depending portions 12 of the handle frame passing through openings 13 in the connector bar and through the openings 9 in the respective levers. The handle frame is connected by ring connectors 14 engaging the terminals of the depending portions 12 of the handle frame below the plane of the levers, the ring member overlying the flattened portions 8 of the levers in rear of the opening 9. The handle members are thus removably connected to the respective levers in a manner to permit the relatively independent movement of said levers to a slight degree.

are alined, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the bearing plates 7 of the respective levers 4 separated and placed in contact with the outermost surface of each end brick. The upward pull upon the handle 10 necessary to lift the bricks causes the bearing plates, through the medium oi the levers 4 to be in effect forced against the surface of the brick with which they are in contact, this pressure approximately equaling the Weight of It is obvious, therefore, that the pressure exerted against the end bricks will so bind the intermediate bricks as to prevent their displacement while free of a support.
When it is desired to release the lifter pressure is exerted upon the handle and connecting bar to cause a these parts to approach each other, depressing the inner or proximate ends of the levers 4 and thereby withdrawing the bearing plates from contact with the end bricks of the series.
The various parts of the lifter are constructed of substantial material, preferably metal, and the simplicity of the construction precludes breakage of the parts in ordinary use.
While preferring the specific details described it is to be understood that I contemplate as Within the spirit of the present invention all such changes and modifications as may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:
1. A lifter comprising a connecting bar, gripping levers supported thereby, and a handle member movably con nected with the bar and directly connected with said levers.
2. A lifter comprising a connecting bar, clamping levers supported thereby, bearing plates carried by the outer ends of the levers, and a handle member connecting the inner ends of the levers, said handle member operating through the connecting bar.
A lifter comprising a connecting bar, a handle member movable through the bar, clamping levers pivotally supported by the bar and extending in opposite directions therefrom, said handle member being directly connected to the inner ends of the levers, and bearing plates carried at the outer ends of the levers.
4.. A lifter comprising a connecting bar bent to provide terminal depending portions, the free end of each of which is formed to provide spaced ears, a clamping lever formed with pivot bearings intermediate the ends, a pivot pin joining the ears of the connector bar and engaging the pivot bearing, a clamping plate carried by the end of said lever, a handle member slidably mounted in the connecting bar, the terminal of said member being passed through openings formed in the relatively inner end of the clamping levers, and means for securing said member to the lever.
5. A lifter comprising a connecting bar bent to provide terminal depending portions, the free end of each of which is formed to provide spaced ears, a clamping lever formed with a pivot bearing intermediate the ends, a pivot pin joining the ears of the connector bar and engaging the pivot bearing, a clamping plate carried by one end of said lever, a handle member slidably mounted in the connecting bar, the terminals of said member being passed through openings formed in the relativel inner end of the clamping levers, and a ring; connected to the handle member beyond the clamping lever and embracing 10 the clamping lever beyond the handle member.
