JULIUS HEUSSER, MONROE, WISCONSIN.
HAY-FORK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JUL1US Hnussnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Monroe, county of Green, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Forks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in hay forks and'particularly to the means for connecting the fork with'the supporting head.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated a single cross bar orheadis adapted tofreceive a fork at eachend thereof and the hanger or other support for the fork is of such form that it is adapted to receive either a double'or singlefork.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view ofan embodiment of the invention including two double forks; Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the manner'in which a single harpoon fork is engaged by the device; Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of the supporting headand one of the hangers with the hay fork removed; Fig. 4. is a detail view showing one of the hang ers separated from thesupporting head.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the main supporting head which is provided with an intermediate depending eye 2' adapted to receive the pin of a clevis by which the device is connected to a suitable hoisting cable. Each end of the head 1 is slotted and in each of said slots is pivotally mounted a hanger comprising two jaws 3, 4:, adapted to receive between them and snugly engage the cross bar 5 of a double harpoon fork, as shown in Fig. 1, or the loop or open head 6 of a single fork, as shown in Fig. 2. The member 3 of each hanger has a section 7 that extends through the slot at the end of the cross-head 1 and is pivotally engaged with said cross-head as by a bolt 8. At its upper end said member 7 is provided witha stopmember 9 which overlaps the side walls of the slot in which said hanger is pivoted and is adapted to contact with a stop 10 on the head 1 to limit outward turning movement of the fork hanger.
Theportion 7 of the hanger is of less thickness than the jaw member 3 soas to provide shoulders 11 which contact with the lower surface of the head 1 when the hanger is in substantially vertical position and prevent further movement of said Specification of Letters Patent.
hanger and fork supported thereby toward the other hanger. The upper end of the' will be closely engaged with the hanger;
The lower ends of the jaws 3, 41,316 provided with suitable connecting means by which the jaws will be maintained in engagement with the fork fitted thereto. As shown this means comprises a bolt 14 passing through suitable passages in the jaws and a nut 15 screwed thereon. a
From the foregoing description and the drawing it willrbe seen that the invention provides a very simple and strong construction which is readily adapted for use with either a double or single fork. If it is desired to remove a fork from one of the hangers it is merely necessary to loosen the connection between the jaws and swing the outer one about its pivot 12 when the fork previously engaged by said jaws will be released and another can be quickly substituted.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is,
1. In a hay fork, the combination of a support provided with a suitable slot, a hanger fitted in said slot and pivotally connected to the support, and stops on the hanger above and below the pivot thereof adapted to contact with the support to limit turning movement of the hanger.
2. In a hay fork, the combination of a supporting head having slots formed in its ends, a hanger pivotally supported in each of said slots, and stops carried by each hanger, above and below the pivot thereof, and adapted to contact with the head to limit turning movement of the hanger.
3. In a hay fork, the combination of a supporting head having slots formed in its ends, a hanger pivotally supported in each of said slots, and extending above and below the head, a shoulder formed on the depending portion of each hangerand adapted to Patented an so, 1915. Application filed August 8, 1914 Serial No. 855,767. r
contact with the supporting headto limit turning movement of the fork in one direction, and a stop on each hanger, above the head, adapted by contact with the head to limit turning movement of the hanger in the I opposite direction.
4. In a hay fork, the combination of a supporting head having slots formed in its ends, a hanger pivotally supported in each of said slots, and extending above and below the head, a shoulder formed on the depending portion of each hanger and adapted to contact with the supporting head to limit turning movement of the fork in one direction, and a stop on each hanger above and overhanging the walls of the slot in which the hanger ispivoted adapted to engage the head to limit turning movement of the hammer in the opposite direction.
5. In a hay fork, he combination of a' comprising two relatively movable jaws or Copies of this patent may be obtained or five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
clamping members, adapted to closely embrace either the cross bar of a. double fork or the head loop of a single fork, and means for securing said jaws in closed relation.
7 In a hay fork, the combination of a supporting head, and a fork hanger pivot- I ally supported at each end of said head and ally mounted on the first said member and cooperating therewith. to form two jaws adapted to engage and support a hay fork, and means on each hanger adapted to. cooperate with the supporting head to limit turning movement of the hanger.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
