SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,952, dated December 4, 1888. Application filed May 16, 1888. Serial No. 274,047. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH IV. VOOD, of Baraboo, in the county of Sauk and State of lvisconsin, and ALVINUS B. IVOOD, of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and Territory of \Vasl1ington, have invented a new and Improved Rope-Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to an improved ropeclamp, and has for its object to provide a tripping device adapted more particularly for attachment'to the several binding-strands of a rope or chain utilized for hoisting or elevating hay or equivalent material, whereby the several strands are unit-ed beneath the load in the device, and v-wherein the said device is used to release the ropes by which the load is held expeditiously and conveniently and the load is deposited in the desired place.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, partially in section, illustrating the carrier attached thereto; and Fig. 2 illustrates a modification of that portion ofthe carrier adapted for attachment to the clamp.
The body 10 of the device is preferably made of metal cast in one piece, the said body being' provided with a recess in its upper end, Whereby ears 11 are formed, and also with a' transverse recess, 12, at or near the center. Below the recess 12 an opening, 13, is provided, which opening is located near the base of the device intersecting the under portion of the aforesaid recess 12, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. Upon one side of the device adjacent to the opening 1S a tubular projection, 14, is formed, which project-ion constitutes an integral portion of the body.
Between the ears 11 the upper end of the hook 15 is pivoted, the lower extremity of which hook is provided with an outwardlyextending lip, 1G, the upper wall of the recess 12 being inclined or curved outward in the direction of the said hook for the better reception of the same.
In the recess 12, immediately above the opening 13, a lever, 17, is pivoted, which lever projects outward at each side of the body, extending' farther upon that side to which the tubular projection 14 is attached. In the'end of the lever 17, over the tubularprojection 14, is an aperture, 18, and adjacent to said aperture, in the upper end of the lever, an angular recess, 19, is formed,which recess is adapted for the reception of the lip 1G of the hook.
Near the opposite end of the lever 17, also upon the upper side, a lug, 20, is cast, upon which lug one end of a spring, 21, is secured, the said spring being adapted at its other end for reception in a diagonal bore, 22, formed in' the body of the device.
A trip-rope, 23, is projected upward through the tubular projection 14 and secured to the lever 17 at the apertured end 18, and a rope, 24, is secured in the body-opening 1S.
In operation we utilize four binding-ropesthe rope 24 and three others, respectively numbered 25, 2G, and 27-each of which ropes at one end is provided withan eye, as shown in Fig. 1, or an attached link, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The other ends of the said ropes are to be united by tying, or in any approved manner, above the bundle of hay or other material to be elevated, as hereinafter set forth. To unite the strands, the hook 15 is released from the lever 17, and the eye of the central 'strand 27 is )assed throuO-h the e Yes of the several side strands, 25 and 2G, the eye of the aforesaid central strand, 27, being also passed `over the hook 15, which hook is thereupon carried inward to an engagement with the lever 17, which is its normal position. The side strands, 25 and 26, are prevented from working sidewise by means of a large knot, 2S, formed upon the central strand, 27 above the eye thereof, o r by other approved means.
In the further operation of the device it is laid in position to receive the hay or other material to be built upon it. The four ropes or chains 24, 25, 26, and 27are connected in the center by the device and cross each other at right angles as nearly as may be convenient.
