T o (M whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD TrrUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowling Green, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Device for Pulling Beets,'Thistles, and the like, of which the following is a spec1- fication.

This invention relates to a device for pull ing beets, thistles' and the like, one of the objects being to provide a device of due type which can be easily carried from place to place and which has jaws adapted to be forced into the ground and to be shifted relative to each other so as to loosen and clamp upon the growth to be removed, simple means being provided for actuatmg the jaws and additional means being em-v ployed whereby the jaws can be forced into the ground by either or both hand and foot pressure.

A further object is to provide an implement of this character which is formed of but few parts, cheap to manufacture, and will not easily get out of order;

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the main holding strip, the same being slidably engaged by yokes 2 having inturned ends 3, these yokes being secured to the end portions of a slidable holding strip 1 extending longitudinally of the strip 1 but much shorter than said strip. The upper end portions of the strips 1 and 4 have outstanding grips 5 and 6 respectively.

Thus it will be seen that when the strip 4 is drawn upwardly along the strip 1 the links 12 will pull on levers 8 and move the jaws toward each other to bring their tongues 10 into contact at their lower edges. However, when strip a is shifted in the opposite direction, the jaws will be swung apart.

A longitudinal series of openings 13 is formed within the strip 1 and any one of these openings is adapted to receive a stop pin 14 connected to one of the links 12 chain 15 or the like. Thispin extends into the path of the upper endportions of links 12 and limits the movement of said links toward the pivot '7. V i

In using the implement the grip or handle 6 is thrust downwardly away from the handle 5 thus to cause the toggle links 12 to press against levers 8 and swing the aws 9 apart. The tongues 10 on the jaws are placed against the surface of the ground at opposite sidesof the growth to be pulled and if the ground is soft the jaws are thrust into the ground simply by pressing down wardly on the two handles 5 and 6. If the downward movement of the links 12 and strip at has been stopped by the inserted pin 1%, the-jaws can be thrust into the soil simply by pressing downwardly on the handle 6. After the jaws have been pressed to the desired depth the handle 6 is pulled upwardly relative to handle 5 thus to force jaws 9 to move toward each other and clamp between them the growth to be removed. Further upward pulling on the handle will result in the withdrawal of the jaws from the ground, the growth therebetween being lifted therewith.

Should the ground be hard and it be difficult, consequently, to force the jaws into the ground by pressure upon one or both of the handles, a foot can be placed on the rest 11 and pressure thus exerted upon the implement.

The device can be used efliciently as a means for removing beets and thistles from the ground, for transplanting vegetables and for various other similar purposes. By utilizing the pin 14 and placing it in a selected opening 1.3, the relative movement of the jaws 9 can be controlled and it becomes possible simply by pushing downwardly on the handle 6, to force the jaws apart and at the same time press them into the soil.

It will be seen that the entire device is very simple, durable and compact and can be easily and cheaply manufactured. It is comparatively light and thus can be carried from place to place without inconvenience.

An implement of the class described including parallel members movable longitudinally relative to each other, a handle upon each member, crossed levers fulcrumed upon one of the members, opposed jaws carried by the respective levers, link connections between the other member and the respective levers.
