Description
H; F. CLAYPOOL. BOLT FULLER. APPLICATION FILED JAN-30.1918.
- Patented June 18,1918.
HARRY F. CLAYPOOL, or nasal s'r. LOUIS, L-mas,
Specification of Letters mat; P t nf n 1 191 Application filed January 30, 1918. Serial No.; 214,471.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY F. CLAYPooL,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of East St. Louis, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Pullers, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bolt pullers and has for its object a construction of a tool for pulling bolts whichis used in bridge building, ship yards and railroad work.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side View of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the bolt pulling jaws out of operation.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the jaws engaging the bolt.
Fig. 4; is a top view of the bolt gripping jaws and their supporting frame.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the guide yoke which I employ, and,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the gripping jaws.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a spike puller 7 which is equipped with the usual bifurcated jaw 8. On the shank of the spike puller is swivelly mounted the U-shaped frame 9, this frame being held by means of a bolt or pivot 10.
In the frame 9 are pivotally mounted ipping jaws 11, having their opposing ees 12 inclined and provided with corrugations or teeth, so as to grip the bolt or object to be pulled.
These jaws are pivoted in the frame 9 at a point indicated by the numeral 13. To prevent a downward movement of the jaws 11, that is, to prevent the jaws coming too closely together I provide a pair of stops 14 located on each side of the U-frame and against which the faces 12 of the gripping jaws 11 come in contact. In order to prevent the gripping jaws from falling or moving too far in the opposite direction when the U-shaped frame is swung in the direction of the handle of the claw bar, I
provide stops 14 Rigidly attached to the U-frame 9 1s secured a guide yoke 14;", which is recessed at its central portion as indicated by the numeral 15. The ends 16 of this guide yoke being secured to the frame work 9 in any suitable mechanical manner.
This guide yoke 14 performs two functions, namely, it acts as a guide for the bolt being pulled and at the same time is a plate to receive the pressure of the points 17 of the bifurcations 8.
It will be observed from the illustrations that the bottom of the bifurcations 8 is curved in contour as indicated by the numeral 18, and serves as a rocker when my device is being used.
The operation is as follows:
The bolt is first started by use of the bifurcations 8, and is fed upwardly between the jaws 11, where it is gripped by the corrugated faces 12, and by operating the spike puller similar to the manner of operating a pump handle, any length of bolt or spike can be withdrawn without the need of blocking up the spike puller-the jaws releasing themselves when the free end of the spike puller is raised and gripping the bolt when the free end of the spike puller .is pressed downwardly.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A bolt puller comprising a handle, a bifurcated jaw mounted on the lower end thereof, a U-shaped frame mounted above the bifurcated jaw, and a pair of gripping jaws pivotally mounted in said frame the opposing faces of which are inclined and provided with teeth.
2. A bolt puller comprising a handle, a jaw mounted on the lower end thereof, a U- shaped frame mounted above said jaw, a pair of gripping jaws pivotally mounted in said frame the opposing faces of which are inclined and provided with teeth, stops between the corrugated faces of said jaws, and stops carried by the U-shaped frame for limiting the open position of the jaws.
3. A bolt puller comprising an operating handle, a curved rocker portion carried by the lower end of the operating handle, fixed jaws carried by the curved rocker portion, a U-shaped frame pivotally carried by the handle and mounted above the fixed jaws, a pair of gripping jaws pivotally secured to the U-shaped frame, said gripping jaws being provided with inclined opposing faces, and stops carried by the 'U-shaped frame for limiting the movement of the inclined faces over each other. cured to the U-shaped frame. e 4:.
