Description

0. HAMPELL.
COTTER PIN FULLER. APiLICATlON FILED AUG-28, I'll- 1,258,674. Patented-M 12, 191a.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR HAMPELL, OF CICERO, ILLINOIS.
COTTER-PIN PULLER.
Application filed August 28, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR HAMrnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the village of Cicero, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Cotter-Pin Puller, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective tool specially adapted to pull cotterpins from bolts and other parts into which such pins may have been inserted.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side-elevation of my tool, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof, showing it in position for withdrawing a cotterpin from a bolt, at the completion of the withdrawal.
Referring to the drawings, my tool consists of a lower member 10, provided with handle 11, claw 12, upwardly projecting parallel flanges 13, and wart 14. Between flanges 13, there is oscillatably mounted, on a rivet or bolt 15, projected through flanges 13, upper member 16 which is provided with handle 17, claw 18, and wart 19. Compression spring 20 is mounted between handles 11 and 17 on warts 1 1 and 19. Claw 18 consists of a tapering, substantially round, body ending in a dull point 21 which is adapted to enter the eye of a cotterpin. Claw 12 is somewhat shorter than claw 18, and is pro- Speciflcation of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 117,222.
vided on its lower side, along its middle, with a longitudinal groove 22.
The operation of my tool is as follows:
Point 21 is inserted into the eye of the cotterpin to be withdrawn, and claw 12 is made to rest upon the bolt or other body from which the cotterpin is to be withdrawn. Handles 11 and 17 then being pressed together, point 21 will move away from claw l2, and the cotterpin will be pulled out, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. Groove 22 will in such case tend to hold claw 12 from slipping sidewise when placed upon the end of a bolt, as shown in Fig. 2.
It is obvious that my device might be changed in some particulars, without a departure from the scope of the claim.
I claim A cotterpin-puller, consisting of a pair of pliers pivoted to open the plier-j aws by compression of the handles, one of said jaws being provided with a substantially straight, pointed end adapted to enter the eye of the ootterpin, and the other jaw being shorter and provided with a longitudinal groove on its outer side, for the purpose described.
