Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, James P. RATIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Coalinga, in the county of Fresno and tate of California, have invented certain new and useful IIHPIOYQIHQIltS in'Combined Pipe and Rod renches and Cutters; and I dode clare the following to be a full, clear, 'and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to improvements in combined pipe and rod wrenches and, cutters.
One object of the'invention is to provide a tool for more firmly'and securely clamping or gripping a rod or pipe than heretofore and without injury to such pipe or rod.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool having a' movable block or jaw provided with a plurality of'sides, each of which may be brought into engagement with the rod, pipe or other object intended to be clamped, cut or otherwise operated upon.
A still further object resides in the pro-' vision of a device which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efiicient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. 1
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with this invention, showing a rod clamped between the jaws thereof; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device show ing the manner in which it is used when cutting a rod or pipe.
In these drawings, constituting a part of this application, 1 represents a metal casting having a notch 2 in its front edge. thereby forming a substantially U-shaped head. One arm 3 of this head-1 is provided with a threaded aperture 4, while the other arm 5 is provided on its inner face with a transversely extending groove 6. The edge of the portion of the head 1 between the arms 3 and 5 thereof is substantially flat, for a purpose hereinafter to be described.
. connected to the link 8 as Pivoted at one end to one side of the head 1 in any suitable manner, preferably by a bolt 7, is a link 8, the other end of which is provided with an elongated aperture 9. Sliding between the arms 3 and 5 of the head 1 and in the notch 52 is a substantially rectangular block having the work en-- gaging elements to be hereinafter described. This block 10 is pivoted to the last mentioned end of the link 8 by a bolt 11, the shank portion of which extends tl'irough the aforesaid elongated aperture 9 and into said block. Thus it may be seen that when the block 10 is moved to its uppermost and lowermost positions it will not bind as otherwise it would do.
The block 10 is provided with substantially flat edges, one of which is provided with a transversely extending groove 12 while the adjacent edge thereof is provided with a recess 13 adjacent to the opposite side edges of which are alined bearings 14. Revolubly mounted in these bearings 14 is the shaft 15 of a rotary disk cutter 16. By having the block 10 loosely and pivotally scribed, it may be seen that said block may be turned to bring either the edge in which the groove is disposed opposite the inner face of the arm 5, or the edge whereon the cutter is mounted opposite such face. The substantially flat edges of the block slidably engage the beforementioned flat portion of the head between the arms thereof, and prevent the block from becoming anghlarly disposed. Operating within the threaded aperture 4 in the arm 3 of the head 1 is a screw 17, the
upper end of which is provided with a suitable handle 18. However, this handle 18 may be dispensed with and the upper end of the screw 17 may be squared as shown at 19 in Fig. 3 of the drawings for engagement with a suitable wrench. The lower end of the screw 17 extends into the notch 2 and bears against the upper edge of the block 10, whereby when the former is turned the latter is moved downwardly.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings a rod B is shown clamped between the block 1 and the arm 5, the opposite sides of said rod R being received in the grooves 12 and 6 respectively whereby it may be seen that the rod is in no way injured. This makes the device particularly adapted for clamping or gripping the polish rods of oil wells. for, without going into any details of the reasons why hereinbefore de-' it is desired to grip such rods, it is to be understood that no injury must be done to them and at the same time powerful clamping force must be exerted upon them.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings the block 10 is shown with the cutter 16 in position for cutting the rod R, and while in this position vand proportion may be resorted to without departing from the spirit df this invention,
