- This invention relates to means for temporarily securing in proper operative position to the post of a building structure, pipe vises and like implements, and the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and efficient structural formation and association of parts whereby the base or main member of a pipe vise or the like can be firmly secured to the post of a building structure regardless of variations in the cross-sectional shape or area of said post, in a manner which permits of ready attachment and detachment and without presenting any projections which would interfere with the ordinary use and operation of a pipe vise or other implement so attached, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 5, 1916. Serial No. 107,568.
To all whom it M any concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. BENSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post .Pipe- Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for temporarily securing in proper operative position to the post of a building structure, pipe vises and like implements, and the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and efficient structural formation and association of parts whereby the base or main member of a pipe vise or the like can be firmly secured to the post of a building structure regardless of variations in the cross-sectional shape or area of said post, in a manner which permits of ready attachment and detachment and without presenting any projections which would interfere with the ordinary use and operation of a pipe vise or other implement so attached, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the present invention in use for clamping a plumbers vise to the square post of a building structure. Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same with parts in section. Fig. 3, is an axial section illustrating a modified form of winged nut of the present improvement.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the main or fixed member of a pipe vise, of the usual pedestal type, and provided at one end with a screw-threaded hub 2 for operative association with the handled screw shaft 8, by which the movable jaw carrier 4 is moved to and from the recessed fixed jaw plates 5 carried by the main member as shown.
6 designates an opening or bearing recess formed in the web of the fixed member 1 aforesaid for the reception of the attaching chain cable 7 of the present structure; and said chain cable is adapted to slip freely through said recess in the operation of attaching the vise in )lace upon a post.
The chain cable 7 above referred to, will have suflicient len h to encircle the maximum size of buil 11g posts to which it is intended to apply a vise, and will preferably comprise a series of interlinked mugs of an oval shape as shown in Figs. land 2. y
8 designates a guide-hub forming a part of the fulcrum block of the present structure, the bore of which is of a diameter adapted to permit an uninterrupted movement of the shank of the adjustable screw shaft 12 hereinafter described.
9 designates a laterally extending rocker or abutment knee integrally formed on one side of the guide hub 8 aforesaid, and adapted in actual use to bear upon the face of the post 10 of a building structure and provide a rocking bearing for the fulcrum block.
11 designates a hook attached to the hub and abutment knee aforesaid, and having engagement with one end of the chain cable 7 aforesaid.
12 designates an adjustable screw shaft, one end of which has a hook formation 13 adapted for engagement with a link or ring of the chain cable 7 remote from the end of said cable which is attached to the hook 11 aforesaid. The portion of the shaft 12 ad jacent to the book 13 is left plane and is adapted for sliding engagement in the bore of the hub 8 of the fulcrum block aforesaid, while the portion or end of said shaft 12 remote from the hook 13 is screw-threaded for operative engagement with the winged adjusting-nut 14 of the present structure.
In the preferred form of the present invention, an interposed bearing-sleeve or collar 15 with its bore unthreaded so as to have no operative engagement with the screwshaft 12, is associated with the winged handnut 14 aforesaid. With the described construction the unthreaded portion of the adjusting shaft 12 will have close sliding engagement with the bore of the guide-hub 8, with no liability to binding or catching of the parts in the operation of adjusting the same. And the length of the collar 15 will preferably correspond with the length of travel which it is desired the adjusting shaft to have, and which usually will be the length of one of the rings or links of the chain cable 7.
While it is preferable on account of economy in manufacture to make the winged nut 14 and interposed collar 15 as separate pieces as shown more particularly in Fig. 2,
it is, however, withinihe scope of the present invention to combine the two members as one integral piece, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Having thustfully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a pipe vise, a chain cable, an orificed fulcrum block having an integrally formed rocker knee at one side and in adjacent relation to said knee, a hook having engagement with one end of the chain cable, a screw shaft having movement in the guide orifice of the hub aforesaid, and provided at one end with a hook adapted for engagement with an end portion of the chain cable, and a hand-nut engaging the screw-shaft and adapted to effect an adjustment of the same.
2. The combination of a pipe vise, a chain cable, an orificed fulcrum block having a hook at one side for engagement with one end of the chain cable, a screw shaft havin movement in the ide orifice of the fu crum-block and provided at one end with a hook adapted for engagement with an end portion of the chain cable, a hand-nut engaging the screw shaft, and an unthreaded sleeve interposed between said nut and the fulcrum block. 7

The combination of a pipe vise, a chain cable, an orificed fulcrum block having an integrally formed rocker knee at one side and in adjacent relation to said knee a hook having engagement, with one end of the chain cable, a screw shaft having movement in the guide orifice of the hub aforesaid, and provided at one end with a hook ada ted for engagement with an end portion 0 the chain cable, a hand-nut engaging the screw shaft, and an unthreaded sleeve interposed between said nut and the fulcrum-block.
