3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in bench-Vises in which a movable jaw is operatedby a screw coupled with the movable jaw and engaging with a nut mounted or formed in the vise-body.
The object of this invention is to provide simple and effective means for firmly coupling the operating-screw with the movable jaw, and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts ashereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which certain modes of carrying out the present invention are shown for illustrative purposes:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a vise embodying this invention;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig, 3;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the movable jaw, detached;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the couplingyoke, detached;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the finishingplate, detached;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of another form of coupling-yoke;
Fig. 9 is a side view showing part of the movable jaw of a vise, to illustrate a modified form of means for interlocking a coupling-yoke with the said jaw; and
Fig. 10 is a perspective View of the couplingyoke shown in Fig. 9, detached.
The vise comprises a base If], a fixed jaw II, a movable jaw l2 and an operating-screw IS. The base I is adapted to be secured to a bench or other surface in the usual manner, and the fixed jaw may be formed integral therewith or secured thereto in any suitable manner, and is provided with the usual guide-opening I4 for the slide l of the movable jaw-l 2 which is formed with a recess IE to clear a nut forming part of the fixed jaw II, thesaid nut to be entered by the operating-screw I3. This screw is provided with a head IS, the inner face of which is seated in a recess IS in the front face of the jaw l2, and the head I8 is formed near its inner end with an annular groove 20, for the reception of a coupling-yoke 2| which may be formed by stamping from sheet steel.
The lower ends of the yoke 2| are preferably formed with beveled edges 22-22 to engage with reversely-beveled notches 2323, and the yoke 2| is secured to the front face of the movable jaw l2 by a screw 24, which also holds in position a finishing-plate 25 which may be of cast metal and which also serves to prevent filings or other material from entering the groove 20, which is preferably wider than the thickness of the yoke 2| so as to prevent the yoke from binding when the head i8 is turned. The head I8 is provided with the usual handle 26.
Instead of forming the coupling-yoke 2| and the finishing-plate 25 in two parts, they may be formed in one piece as shown in Fig. 8, or a yoke 21 may be formed with arms 28 terminating in fingers 29 to enter notches 30 formed for them in the sides 3| of the movable jaw, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10 of the drawings. In either construction, the coupling-yoke is connected with the movable jaw not only by a screw but by the engagement of the ends of the yoke with notches formed in the movable jaw to receive them.
A firm connection is thus formed between the head of the screw and the movable jaw which connection will withstand the strain and wear to which it is subjected particularly in larger sizes of Vises.
I claim:
1. A vise comprising fixed and movable jaws combined with a screw by means of which the movable jaw is moved inward or outward, said movable jaw formed in its outer face with notches, said screw provided with a head formed near its inner end with an annular groove, and
a coupling-yoke secured to the movable jaw' above the screw and extending into said groove and having its ends entered into said notches in said movable jaw.
2. A vise comprising fixed and movable jaws combined with a screw by means of which the movable jaw is moved inward or outward, said movable jaw formed in its outer face with beveled notches, said screw provided with a head formed near its inner end with an annular groove, and a fiat sheet-metal coupling-yoke having beveled ends, said yoke secured to the movable jaw above said screw and extending into said groove and having its ends entered into said notches in said movable jaw.
3. A vise comprising fixed and movable jaws combined with a screw by means of which the movable jaw is moved inward or outward, said movable jaw formed in its outer face with beveled notches, said screw provided with a head formed near its inner end with an annular groove, a flat sheet-metal coupling-yoke having beveled ends, said yoke secured to the movable jaw above said screw and extending into said groove and having its ends entered into said notches in said movable jaw, and a finishing-plate over said yoke and extending over said groove.
CHARLES M. GEARING.
