Description

March 1, 1927.' 1,619,604 C. FY DOW u v l PIPE WRENCH Filed March 17. 1925 I Will/Ilz g Patented Mar. 1, 1927.
` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PIPE WRENCH.
Application inea March 17, i925. seriai No. 16,169.
The invention relates to pipe wrenches and has for its object the improvement of wrenches of the sliding jaw type particularly adapted :tor operation on pipes and other round work by which the tool is made more eliicient, and in which the structure is simplified so as to reduce the cost of production of a tool of the type referred to.
The details of the construction and opera-` tion and advantages of the invention will be described hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the improved wrench;
Fig. 2, a :tragmental view showing the housing of the movable jaw in section;
Fig. 3, a section on a plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4, a similar view on a. plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be 4used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The shank of the wrench 1 has a jaw 2 integral therewith, and shank 1 is provided with a ratchet face 3, and aw 2 with serrations 4. A movable jaw 5 is slidably mounted on shank 1 and provided with a ratchet face 6 adapted to engage the ratchet 3, 7 indicating a U-shaped housing enclosing the shank 1 and secured to jaw 5 by means ot rivets 8. A spring 9 is secured in the bight of U-shaped housing 7 and by engaging the shank 1 holds the jaw 5 in locked position on the shank, it being readily apparent that the movable jaw 5 may be moved forward toward the iXed jaw 2 to adjust the jaw for the work at hand, but should it be desired to withdraw the jaw from proximity to fixed jaw 2, is will be necessary to depress the spring 9 by pressing on the housing 7 to release the :tace 6 from engagement with the ratchet 3. The Jface of jaw 5 adjacent jaw 2 is as shown inclined away from said jaw and provided with a V-shaped groovev 10. 11 indicates a block sldably mounted on jaw 5 and formed with a V-shaped surtace to engage thevV-shaped groove 10, and
also provided with a serrated face 12 to coact with the lsei-rations 1 in engaging the pipe or other member engaged by the wrench. 13 indicates guide plates or flanges secured to block 11 by means of rivets 14;, and 15 designates a spacing sleeve secured between said plates 13, and engaging slot 16 in jaw5. 17 indicates a spring engaging spacing sleeve 15 and the operative end ot' slot 16 and normally tends to hold the block 11 projected away from shank 1.
The face of block 11 adjacent the shank 1 is provided with ratchet teeth 18 that are adapted to engage ratchet teeth 3.
It will be understood that in operation the pipe or other article to be operated on by the wrench will be engaged between jaws 2 and 5, the slidable block 11 being at its outermost position away from the shank. As the wrench is turned on the pipe, the block 11 will be moved inwardly toward the shank and the teeth 18 will finally engage the teeth 3 thus supplementing the ratchet face 6 of the jaw 5 in clamping the pipe or other article between the jaws.
What is claimed is In a pipe wrench, in combination with a shank and a iXed aw thereon, ratchet teeth on said shank, a movable jaw member slidably mounted on said shank and having ratchet teeth adapted to engage the teeth on the shank, means to maintain said ratchet teeth in engagement, said movable jaw member provided with a V-shaped groove in its face opposite the ixed jaw, a pipe-engaging block slidably mounted on said movable jaw adapted for movement towards the shank through engagement with a pipe and having a face shaped to engage said V-shaped groove, spring actuated means to project said block away from and in spaced relation to the shank so that it may be moved toward the same when a pipe is engaged and the face of the block adjacent the shank provided with ratchet'teeth adapted to engage the ratchet teeth on the shank through said inward sliding movement.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
