Description

C. M. JOHNSON.
` Scissors. N0, 146,457, i Patented Jani 13, 1874.
UNITED STATES OAMILLUS M. JOHNSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENTIN sclssoRs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,457, dated January 13, 1874; application filed November 2e, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAMILLUs M. J onNsoN, oi' New York, in the county of New York and Staterof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the gures indica-te the same parts.
My invention consists in arranging upon one of the blades of a pair of scissors a sliding knife-blade, which can be pushed out or drawn back, as occasion may require. The object of my invention is to provide the means of cutting or ripping, or any other purpose for which a knife is usually employed, so that it can be used in connection with the scissors,
and form part of the saine implement.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a side. view of a pair of scissors or shears with the knife attached; the blade is shown projected forward ready for use. Fig.
2 is a cross-section on the line w y of Fig. l.
a and b are the blades of the scissors, and
c d the handles. The blade a is madesoinewhat thicker than usual, and has the groove or slot e e cut in it. In this groove slides the rear end or square part of the knifeblade g, so as to nearly ill it. f is a clamp-screw for holding the blade in any desired position. When loosened, the blade can be pushed out; then, by a turn of the screw, it can be held firmly for use. It can likewise be drawn back when loose, and rinly secured in its place by means of the screw.
The scissors are made in any ordinary inanner, and the groove for the knife cut after the blade'is formed. The knife is inserted, and the ends of the slot may be stopped in any usual manner.
I am aware that a hinged knife-blade attached to a scissors-blade is not new; I therefore do not claim that as my invention.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- The slot e e, in combination with the clamp fand blade g, when arranged upon a pair of scissors, substantially in the manner described.
