UNION SUIT.
Application filed .Tune 8,
T all to hem it may con-cam Be it known that I, WALTER L. PENDER- GRASS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Union Suits, of which this is a specification.
This invention relates to union garments of the kind. known as cover-ails and comblues in a loose fitting garment a shirt and trousers so as to completely cover other clothing of the wearer. This invention herein disclosed is an improvement upon that illustrated in my prior Patent No. 1,398, i43.
An object of this invention is to provide a garment of such character in which the method of fastening the drop seat to the waist band is simplified and improved and in which the fastening buttons are concealed by a portion of the shirt that extends downwardly thereover. This protects the opening between the shirt and the drop seat against accidental entry of dirt or dust, and
gives the garment a much better appearance.
following detailed description and the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of the device.
Figure 2 is a rear view with the drop seat partially lowered. T
Figure 3 is a detail view showing the man ner of securing the drop seat and the protesting band.
Figure 4': is a diagrammatic sectional view through the rear portion of the shirt and waistband showing the apron and the protecting flap. v
The garment consistscf a shirt portion A, trousers B, a waist band C, an apron D being formed as an extension of the shirt portion, and a drop seat E. The shirt and trousers are provided with pockets as desired and the waist band, shirt and trousers are all open at front as indicated. These parts may all be as shown in my prior patent above referred to, or. maybe of any desired construction consistent with the improvement forming the present invention. U
1922. Serial No. 588,720.
. A portion 1 of the back of the shirt has a pieces 2,3 and 4 are stitched together at d. 4
The apron D is formed from another piece 5 ofmaterial the upper end of which is placed between the lower ends of 3 and 4E and the three pieces stitched together as shown at e. The lower edge of the apron D ishemmed as at f. This apron has the general form indicated in Figure 2. This apron or curtain is intended to protect orconceal the undergarments when the drop seat is partly opened in any manner. y
The parts 3 and 4 form the waistband and are provided where desired with the buttons F. The upper edge of the drop seat E has but-ton holesGr which correspond to the buttons F. It is to be noted that when the Other objects will be apparent fromthe drop seat is buttoned in place, the protective flap II formed by pieces l'and2 falls down over the buttons and the line of juncture be- I tween the shirt and the'drop seat and conceals the same. It furthermore protects the garment against the accidental entry of any foreign matter at the opening between the shirt and trousers.
To each'end of the protective flap II is attached an extension Ihaving a buttonhole K. This extension passes through a loop L and the buttonhole K engages a button M at-.
tached to the waistband on the front of the shirt portion. In this manner the protective flap II iscaused to act as a semibelt, and holds the parts in workingposition.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention which is to be regarded as 1imited only by the scope of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention.
A union garment comprising a shirt and trousers joined, a strip of material attached to'the inner face of the shirt at the lower rear edge thereof and having a free edge at 1 21- distance from thes hirt edge, at waist hand :xttaehedto the free. edge of said strip and having fasteningmeans, anvapron attached to the lower edge of the Waist band, the
5 trousers being split at the SiClQSfIOHl the Waist band downwardly to provide a drop seat, and cooperative fastening means on the v WALTER L. PENDERGRASS.
