An object of my invention isto provide'improved means for closing a side-opening of 'a -gara menttrimly and snugly, withoutthe use or zipp'er fastening means, buttons; or equivalent;

It is an. object ofmy invention to provide-aside closure for agarment; which doesnot embody: fastening means, and provides a completeclosure which. will not expose the body-or undergarments regardless of theposture of the-wearer.

Referring to Figs. 1, 3 and 4, one form of my invention is shown as adapted to a coverall workgarment or the like. Said garment comprises a slack and a blouse 2|. A side opening 22 at each side of the slacks provides a drop seat 23 and a front panel 24. As indicated in Figs. 3 and x 4, the blouse is adapted to fasten to the slack by buttoning internally thereof, and said blouse is provided with

false belt portions

25, 26, which are hingedly secured to the blouse and may be brought downwardly, see Fig. 5, to cover the but- 5 ton connections between the blouse and slacks for improvement in appearance and protection against catching the buttons against machinery, etc. when the garment is used as a work garb.

Front panel 24 has a waist-band 21, and drop seat 23 has a cooperating waist-band 28; the respective waist-band portions button together at the sides of the garment when the garment is Worn.

The side openings are defined by plackets 29:

which may be straps of material, doubled, and securely sewed to the front panel and drop-seat portions of the garment at the side seams thereof to provide a slit opening at each side. The placket portions overlie each other when the garment is worn, see Fig. 6.

Such placket construction is conventional and to prevent the side opening from gaping and 'exposing the body or undergarment of the wearer, it is conventional to employ fastening means such as zippers to secure the side openings. 7 g

The present invention affords means whereby the side opening can be fully and trimly closed without the use of fastening means, and in a manner which additionally affords ventilation of the garment at the side openings thereof.

My invention includes the use of a fabric frontispiece or shield 30 of substantially rectangular form which is secured along one of its sideedges to one of the halves of the placket. If, as shown, the pocket is sewn to that portion-which is sewed to the drop seat of the garment, the

shield extends forwardly in overlapping relation-- ship with the front portion of the garment; if the relationship is reversed, the shield would extend rearwardly, to cooperate with the rear por-- tion of the garment. In either case, the shield may be worn internally or externally of the garment. as later described. Means are provided to support the upper free edge of the frontispiece or shield, as will later appear.

Functional advantages are obtained by forming th shield as an integral pocket unit, thereby combining utility with the primary objective of providing a buttonless side closure for a garment.

In the embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figs. 1 through '7, the rear waist-band portion 28 of the slack 2ll is brought forwardly to overlap the front waist-band portion 21 to a substantial extent, see Fig. 5. The shields 30, illl lustrated as pockets, are secured at their rear edge to the rear component of the placket 29, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, and are unsecured to the forward portion of said placket. The pocket 30 is secured along its upper edge to the forwardly projecting portion of rear waist-band 28, see Figs. 4 and 5, and therefore overlies the thigh of the wearer. When the garment is worn, the body contours bring the pocket into a snug relationship with respect to the front portion of the slack, thereby preventing any exposure of the body.

As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 either the front or the seat portion of the garment may be lowered without interference from the pocket for the reason that the said pocket is secured only to the rear portion of the garment.

By reason of the securement of the pocket or shield to the placket portion only along one side edge of said shield, the same may be worn either internally or externally of the garment and appropriate means are provided to support the upper free portion of the pocket or shield when the same is worn externally. Said means may include a cooperating button or buttonhole appropriately located.

In Fig. 4 there is shown a button 3| .on the blouse 2|, and buttonholes 32, 33, respectively on the pocket 30 and waistband 21. The pocket '30 buttons on to-the same button 3|, thereby firmly supporting the pocket 30.

When the pocketis worn externally, a button 34 on the underside of false belt 25 of blouse 2| buttons through buttonhole 32 on pocket 30 to support the same. The false belt 25 conceals the upper edge of the pocket when the pocket is worn externally.

in the previous embodiment, but has a forward and upward contour, see Fig. 12, to bring. the upper edge of the pocket 42 at approximately the upper edge of the waist-band 4|. To support the pocket when it is wornexternally of the garment, as shown in Fig- 13, I provide on the waistband of the garment a'tab.45 having 'a button 46 as illustrated, the said button facing the front of the garment as shown in'Fig. 9, when the pocket is worn internally. When the pocket is worn externally as shown in Figs. 13 and 15, the pocket is unbuttoned from the button 44 and brought outwardly through the side opening to the Fig. 13 position and the tab 45 is brought upwardly and outwardly over the waistband, see Fig. 15, whereupon the pocket is buttoned to the button 45 of said tab, thereby affording adequate upport for the pocket at its said upper free edge. As clearly appears in Fig. 11, the extent of securement of the pocket 42 to the placket 29 may be less than the total length of the side opening defined by said placket, thereby providing additional space at the bottom of the pocket, which forms an opening for ventilation of the garment. However, the principal means for ventilation, as in the Fig. 1 embodiment, is between the pocket and the thereto unattached placket portion.

Whereas I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be un- -derstood that many changes and modifications may be made provided they do not depart from the scope of the claims.

I claim:

1. In a garment having a side opening and a front and rear waistband portion adapted to fasten at or adjacent said side opening, a buttonless side closure comprising a unitary pocket secured at its rear edge to the rear side portion of the garment at a position lower than the rear waist band and extending forwardly in overlapping relationship with the front portion of the garment, the extent of securement of said pocket at its said rear edge being less than the length of the side opening of the garment, whereby said pocket may be brought to a position where it overlaps the front of the garment externally thereof while maintaining the closure of said side opening, and means for removably securing the pocket, at its upper forward corner portion, optionally -to the under or outer sides of the garment at its front waist band portion.

2. In a garment having a side opening and a front and rear waistband portions, a side closure comprising a pocket secured at a side edge to one side portion of the garment and extending in overlapping relationship with the other side portion of the garment, whereby the pocket may be brought through the side opening to be worn optionally internally or externally of the garment, a buttonhole at the upper corner of the pocket, a button on the waistband of the garment for cooperation with said buttonhole to support the pocket beneath the front portion of the garment and a tab secured to said waistband on the inner surface thereof and adapted to be brought outwardly over said waistband to lie over the front of the garment, said tab having a button for cooperation with the buttonhole of said pocket to support the same when the pocket is worn externally of the garment.

3. In' a garment in which openings at the upper sides thereof provide a front portion and a drop seat portion, a closure for the respective side openings, each such closure comprising a pocket secured at its rear edge to the forward edge of the drop seat of the garment at the sides thereof and extending forwardly for overlapping relationship with the front portion of the garment, the extent of securement of said pocket to the seat portion of the garment being slightly less than the length of the side opening, whereby said pocket may be brought outwardly through said side opening to overlie the front portion of the garment or, optionally, positioned beneath the front portion of the garment, and means whereby the free, forward portion of said pocket may be supported by attachment to the front portion of the garment either beneath the latter or in overlying relationship therewith.

4. In a garment having a side opening, and a side-opening waistband, by means of which the garment, at least at one side, is divided into a front and rear portion, closure means for said side opening, comprising a pocket structure secured at a portion of its upper horizontal edge to one of said garment portions, and secured at one, only, of its side edges to the edge of the side opening at the said garment portion and extending into overlapping relationship with the other of said garment portions; the securement of the side edge of the pocket to the side portion of thegarment extending from a point beneath the waistband down to, but not substantially beyond, the bottom of the side opening to permit the pocket to be brought out through the side opening to overlie the portion of the garment with which it is in overlapping relationship, and means on the last-named garment portion to attach the free upper corner portion of the pocket to the garment in either the internally or externally worn positions of the pocket.

5. In a garment having awaistband and a placket-provided side opening, means for preventing exposure of the body or undergarments at said side opening, comprising a pocket structure of substantial width'and a length greater than the length of the side opening, said pocket having the usual substantially vertical access opening, said pocket being secured at its vertical edge adjacent its access opening along one edge, only, of said placket-provided side opening, the uppermost portion of said side edge of said pocket not extending above the lowermost edge of said waistband; the upper edge of said pocket being unsecured to any garment portion and sloping upwardly to a point where the upper corner of the pocket remote from its secured vertical edge is in overlapping relationship with the waistband; the pocket thus being capable of wear either outside ofor internally of, the garment, and means for removably securing said upper corner of the pocket to the garment in either of its said locations.

6. In a garment having a waistband and a side opening, means for preventing exposure of the body or undergarment at said side opening comprising a reversible pocket of substantial width and a length greater than the length of the side opening, said pocket having the usual substantially vertical access opening and secured at its vertical edge adjacent the access opening along the rear edge only of said side opening of the garment, and means for connecting the top of the pocket with the front portion of the waistband at the inner or outer face thereof, the pocket being movable through the side opening from-the interior to the exterior and from the exterior to the interior, whereby the pocket may be worn outside or inside of the garment with the access opening accessible exteriorly of the garment in either position of the pocket.
