IMPROVEMENT IN MOP-HEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,958, dated December 30, 1873; application filed October 31, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, DAVID W. MARSTON and JOHN S. SKINNER, both of Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improved Mop-Head, of which the following is a specification:

Our invention relates to mop-heads, for holding the-swab or mop; and consists in a novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which have for their object to produce a cheap and effective implement, as will be fully set forth hereafter.

Figure l is a perspective view of our invention embodied in one form. Fig. 2 is a similar view of it in another form; and Fig. 3 is a sec- I tional detail view.

'A A represent the handle of the mop; and B, the cross-head, secured to the extremity thereof. The stirrup-wire O, which serves to clamp the mop against the cross-head B, is bent up, as shown in the drawing.

In Fig. 1, the wire forming the stirrup is formed at its upper portion into a slot, a a, by the ends of the wire being brought together and carried up parallel to each other and the handle A. D is a block, which has its under surface concave, so as to-fit on the handle of the mop. E is a clamping-bolt, which is provided with a head, b, at one extremity, and at the otherwith a screw-thread. This bolt passes through the block D and handle of the mophead. F is a thumb-nut, which works on the screw end of the bolt D. The bolt D passes through the slot a a of the stirrup, and as the thumb-nut is screwed down, the flanged head of the bolt clamps the wires against the block D, and effectually holds the stirrup in place. On releasing the pressure, the stirrup may be slid up or down to accommodate the mop.

Fig. 2 shows another embodiment of our invention, and represents each extremity of the stirrup-wire bent over into a hook or slot, one situated on each side of the mop-handle. The wires forming the slots are clamped against the washers on the mop-handle by a clamping device similar to the one shown in Fig. 1, con sisting of the bolt E, constructed with a T-head and screw-thread, a clamping-block or washer, c, and a thumb-nut, F.

It will be perceived on examination that, although the devices are difierent in appearance, yet the principle of construction and operation is the same in both instances-i. 6., forming the stirrup-wire into a slot, and clamping it against the mop-handle by means of a headed bolt and a thumb-nut.

The device is simple, eftectual, and easily manufactured, therefore cheap.

We claim In combination with the handle A and head 13, the stirrup O and clamping device E F, all constructed and operating substantially in the manner described.
