"IMPROVEMENT IN Mops.

Specilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,398, dated October 7, 1879; application filed May 12, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, DECATUR MARDEN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Mops; and I do hereby de clare the following, When taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this speciication, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in that class. of mops in which one end of the mop cloth is secured to the head and the other to a slide upon the handle portion, so that the slidemay be drawn up on the handle, and then by turning the slide twist the cloth around the handle to wring it, or strain the cloth back straight or flat when not in use.

The object ofthe invention is to simplify the adjustment of the slide; also, to provide a simple and eifectual device for attaching a scrubbing-brush; and the invention consists in the construction, as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.

A is the handle, of the usual form, made from wood. B is the head, consisting of a metal loop, also of usual form, and to which one end ot' the cloth C is attached in the usual manner. D is a sleeve arranged to slide freely on the handle, and provided with hooked arms a a, to which the other end ot' the cloth C is attached, and so that more or less slack may be given to the cloth, accordingly as the sleeve D is moved nearer to or farther from the head, as in other mops of similar construction. In

one side of the sleeve D is a longitudinal slot, b, and in this slot a slide, d, is arranged at each side, extending beneath the edges ot' the slot b, so as to form guides or bearings for the slide d; and these bearing or guiding surfaces are inclined to the handle, as seen in Fig. 3, so

that the slide acts as a wedge between the handle and sleeve, to set the sleeve at any desired point, by simply forcing the slide to a bearing in the space between the handle and sleeve, as in Fig. 3; or by moving the slide into the larger part ot said space, as in broken lines, Fig. 3, the sleeve may be freely moved along the handle. The slide is provided with a thumb-piece, e, by which to conveniently move it.

When it is desired to wring the cloth, free the sleeve and turn it around the handle, twisting the cloth thereon, as in similar constructions.

To attach the scrubbing-brush E, a clamp, f, is made to hook onto the head, as at h, and with a leg, t', to bear upon the handle above to give an inclined position to the clamp, as seen in Fig. 2, and is also provided with a set screw, l.

At the head is a ledge or bearing, n, outside the point where the hook takes hold, and against which one edge ofthe brush rests, its back lying on the clamp. Then by turning the screw l hard against the opposite edge of the brush it clamps the brush against the bearingn, and this force, because of the bearing n being outside the point where the hook engages the head, tends to press the screw end of the clamp toward the handle, and with sufficient force to hold the clam firmly to the handle, and with it the brush.

I claim- 1. The combination of the handle A, head B, cloth C, sleeve D, constructed with the slot b, having the inclined guiding-surfaces, and the slide d in said slot, all substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of the clamp f, constructed to hook onto the head of the mop, the bearing n, brush E, and screw l, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
