Description
D. R. MANNING.
Combined Paper-Weights and Sponge-Holders. No. 145,883, Patented Dec,23,1873
.24 Q cwil R Mmxm Z I g 4 QMMEEM 0 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAvID B. MANNING, or BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR To JOSEPH J. WALToN AND WILLIAM M. WALTON, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED PAPER-WEIGHTS AN D SPONGE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,883, dated December 23, 1873; application filed December 2, 1873.
ters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined paper-weight and sponge-holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention with the sponge inserted in the holder. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same with the sponge removed; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the mode of using it for sealing envelopes.
A represents the base, made of any suitable dimensions, and of any form or shape desired. From the center of the base A rises a post or standard, B, upon the upper end of which is formed or attached a ring, 0. Through the ring 0 is passed the sponge D, in the manner shown, so that one end, (0, thereof will hang down for acertam distance.
The stand A B C may be made of metal, glass, porcelain, or any other suitable mate rial, and is intended to be used as a paperweight, as' well as to hold the sponge D.
The sponge D being moistened, the end a thereof retains the water, and is intended to be used to moisten envelopes, stamps, or other similar articles, when needed, obviating the necessity of moistening the same with the tongue. The other end of the sponge may be used as a pen-wiper, leaving the end u always clean for the purposes for which it is intended.
The advantages of this device are, that a sponge-cup is'not necessary, and the water naturally fallin g to the lower p art of the sponge, the same can be used as long as it holds the moisture; and the sponge on one side of the ring being used as a pen-wiper only, the other is always clean for the use of stamps, envelopes, or fingers, or for any other purpose desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a combined paper-weight and sponge-holder, consisting of a base, A, a post or standard, B, and a ring or holder, 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingv I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of November, 1878.
D. R. MANNING.
