INKSTAND.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,244, dated December 23, 1890. Application filed March 15, 1890- Serial No. 343,990. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN WM. TAYLOR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain,'residing at Charlottetown, in the Province of Prince Edward Island and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to inkstands; and it has for its object to provide simple and improved means for holding a ring of blottingpaper or other absorbent material in the neck thereof, for the purpose hereinafter described.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in combination with an inkstand of this character, a cushion of cork or other soft material disposed at the bottom thereof and adapted to prevent the pen from striking the bottom of the well.

A further object of the invention is to pro Vide an inkstand of this character which will possess advantages in point of simplicity, durability, cleanliness, inexpensiveness, and general efficiency.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an inkstand embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, showing the means for holding the absorbent ring or pad formed integral with the Well. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the support detachable therefrom. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the latter support. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the absorbent ring or pad.

Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the inkstand, which may be of any desirable shape and ornamental design. Within the neck or near the mouth of the well is provided an annular flange a, forming a support for a ring or pad B of blotting-paper or other suitable absorbent material. In Fig. 2 I have shown the flange a as formed integral with the stand, or in lieu thereof it may be secured within the neck in any suitable manner, so as to form a permanent part of the stand. This, however, is not essential to my invention, as the flange may be provided in any suitable manner, either as a permanent part of the inkstand or as a detachable part. In Figs. 3 and 4: I have illustrated the means by which the latter may be carried out, consisting of a ring 0, constructed of metal or other suitable material, and provided at its lower end with the annular flange a.

To retain the ring 0 in place within the neck of the Well it is provided at its upper end with an outwardly-projecting flange 0, adapted to rest upon the outer edge of the mouth of the well. This ring may be of an endless form and constructed in various sizes to suit different-sized wells; or it may be cut at one side, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4, to adapt the one ring to different-sized wells, the ends lapping each other when applied to a well of lesser diameter than the ring. This latter ring may obviously be constructed of spring material, whereby when it is applied it will exert a pressure against the sides of the well and serve to retain the ring more securely in position. pad 13 may likewise be of an endless form stamped from a sheet of suitable material, or it may be cut in strips and bent round within the well above the flange a. The office of this absorbent ring or pad will be apparent. As a pen is dipped into the well and withdrawn, it frequently strikes against the sides of thewell above the ink-line, depositing some of the fluid thereon, and when again dipped the handle in like manner strikes the inky surface and conveys the ink to the fingers of the writer. By the employment of the absorbentring or pad the ink coming in contact therewith is absorbed instead of re1naining on its surface, and thus soiling of the penhandle is obviated.

D designates a pad of cork or other soft material cemented or otherwise secured to the bottom of the well upon its interior. This pad is disposed directly below the mouth of the well, and, when the pen is dipped, strikes thereon in lieu of the hard surface of the well, thus preserving the point thereof.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination,with an inkstand provided in its neck with an annular flange, of an absorbent pad located above said flange and adapted to rest thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with an inkstand, of an absorbent ring or pad disposed within the neck of the well and near the mouth thereof,

and a cushion pad secured within the well to the bottom thereof and below the mouth, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with an inkstand provided in its neck with an annular flange, of an absorbent ring or pad disposed around the interior surface at theneck and resting upon said flange, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. As an improved article of manufacture, a ring provided at its lower edge with an inwardlyprojecting flange adapted to support an absorbent ring or pad and at its upper edge with an outwardly-proj eetin g flange, the whole being adapted to be disposed within an ink-well and supported therein by the out wardly-projectin g flange, substantially as set forth.

- 5. As an improved article of manufacture,

an attachment for iukstands, comprising a its interior surface and provided with an out wardly-projecting flange for supporting the ring when in position in the neck of the well, substantially as set forth.

6. As an improved article of manufacture, an attachment for inkstands, comprising an adjustable ring adapted to be fitted within the neck of the Well and carry an absorbent pad upon its interior surface, substantially as set forth.
