Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRISON I'I. MCELHINEY, OF NEBRASKA CITY, NEBRASKA.-
FLOWER-POT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 470,437, dated March 8, 1892.
Application filed April 11, 1891. Serial No. 388,588. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON H. MCEL- HINEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nebraska City, in the county of ()too and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new, useful, and additional Improvements in Flower-Pots, (Letters Patent having been issued to me in the United States Patent Office for said flower-pot, No. 446,460, and dated February 17, 1891;) and I do-declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the improvements so claimed by me as will enable others skilled in the art .to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my original invention with the improvements claimed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing topand bottom separated. Fig. 3 is alvertical sectional view of the pot. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view out through on the line 03 0c of Fig. 1, with part 'of the flange z and cushion 8 broken away.
Myimprovements are described as follows: I attach to the edge of the flange z a rubber cushion s, which is fastened to the flange a by means of a groove .9 in the rubber cushion, thus preventing the marring and dampening of anything with which the flower-pot comes in contact. The cup A is made in the ordinary shape of a flower-pot, having a perforated bottom 0 and lugs n, which work in the grooves m of the base B. In one of these perforations p is placed a wick 10, held in place by a knot 19 Said wic'k extends to the bottom of the base-disk B for the purpose of conducting moisture to the earth in cup A. In the lower flange e, close under the perforated bottom 0, is made a hole y for an airvent for the purpose of preventing avacuum when the bottom of flange e passes down into the water in base-disk B. I attach to the cup A a hollow handle and funnel combined e, which extends from the top of cup A to the top of base B, thence continuing through the bottom 0 by means of a tube g, for the purpose of refilling the base-disk B. Said handle and funnel has on either side near the point where it is joined to the cup A depressions e so that said funnel can be used as a handle. In the flange z is a slot Z, one end enlarging into a perforation, through which is forced a screw t, the lower end of which is larger than the neck, so that it will not fall out. When the screw has been forced through the slot and perforation, the bent material is restored to its original position, thus retaining the thumb-screw in an upright positionin the perforation.
Having described myimprovements, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent as improvements to the flower-pot described in Letters Patent No. 446,460, is-
A flower-pot consisting of the base-disk B, having flange 2, provided with a perforation and slot Z, cushion 3, having the groove 3', attached to the periphery of said flange by means of said groove, thumb-screw t, fitting in the perforation Z, pot A, having the perforation y, funnel 6, provided with the depressions e tube (,a-dapted to convey water from said funnel into the-disk B, and bottom 0, having the perforations Z0, and the perforation 23, adapted to carry wick p, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRISON H. MCELHINEY.
Witnesses:
