BENJAMIN FEANKLIN TITUS, OF BRIXTON, I
DEVICE FOR WASHING CLOTHES '.A1\T]J.'IHE. LIKE.
Application filed August 28,1920. Sei-ial" No. 406,693.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'BENJAMIN FRANKLIN Trros, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Saratoga Lodge, Christchurch Road, Brixton, in the county of London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Device Clothes and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for washing clothes of the kind consisting of a number of rollers mounted in a frame provided with a handle by means of which the device can be gripped to enable it to be pressed and traversed over an article of clothing or the like when laid out flat upon a supporting surface and after having been soaked in a suitable washing liquid so as to enable the dirt and liquid to be expressed from said article by the pressure and movement of the device on said article.
According to this invention the frame carrying the rollers consists of a flat rectangular metal plate or stamping to which a handle or gripping portion is secured and which is formed or provided with flat portions at each side and ends which are turned at right angles to the surface of the said plate which sides constitute the supports for the roller spindles carrying rollers which are co-extensive in length with the ends of the said frame and which are disposed at right angles to the sides of the said metal frame which when connected together form an open box shaped frame.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect it will be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawingsin which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved washing device.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same structure.
Figure 3 is a vertical ectional view taken on the section line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 4: is a plan view of the metal plate from which the frame of the device is constructed.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a slight modification of my invention showing the main frame portion consisting of a single strip of metal.
Figure 6 is an end elevation of the structure shown in Figure 5.
for VVashing Figure 7 is a vertical sectional viewon the section line 3-3016 'Figure5. I
Referring to the structure illustrated in the drawings, a rectangular plate is pro vided having integral down turned flanges a and similar down turned end flangesfa Near the lower edge of the flanges a are provided a series of holes a inthe frame which are adapted to receive the ends of spindles 5 upon which are mounted toothed or fluted rollers (2. These spindles may have their ends riveted in the frame or they may be provided with reduced portions having screw threads thereon as shown in Figure 7.
When the spindles are provided with screw threaded ends they are inserted in the frame by spreading the frame so that the screw threaded ends may project through the holes in the frame to receive nuts on the outside of the frame. When so constructed the spindles are held in the frame by means of the shoulders formed at the ends of the reduced portion, which shoulders abut against the sides of the frame. In order to make the assembling above mentioned easy, a frame consisting of a single strip of metal may be provided as shown at D in Figures 5, 6 and 7.
A handle at is provided and is connected to the frame by such members as are shown at a or a, depending upon the kind of frame used. These members are riveted to the frame and are secured at their upper ends to a bar a which passes through the handle.
The rollers a may be constructed of wood or any other material which is suited to the purposes for which my invention is used.
As shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the members a are secured to the frame a by means of rivets 0r bolts a and the sides of the frame a are provided with countersunk portions in which are formed the holes a.
As shown in Figure 5 the members a are bent inwardly so as to provide for the use of a handle which is shorter than the frame.
I claim- 1. A washing device comprising a plate having downwardly turned flanges at each side and inwardly extending perforated bosses provided in each flange, the bosses of one flange being disposed each opposite to a boss of the other flange, a handle secured to said plate, a plurality of fluted rollers, and
spindles passing through said rollers and perforations to support said, rollers rotatably with respect to said plate, said spindles having bearing portions slightly longer than the length of the rollers and reduced end portions forming shoulders adaptedto seat against said bosses, said reduced end portions passing through said perforations,
and being clamped to said plate to prevent rotation thereo v I y 2. A Washing-devicecomprising a plate having downwardly turned flanges at each a side and inwardly extending perforated bossesprovided in each flange, the bosses of one flange beingdisp'osed each opposite to a boss'of the other fia nge, a handle secured to saidplate, a" plurality, of, fluted rollers, and
removable spindles passing through: said resales rollers and perforations to support said rollers rotatably with respectto said plate, said spindles having bearing portions slightly' longer that the length of the rollers and I reduced end portions forming shoulders adapted to seat against said bosses, said re duced endportions passing through'said BENJAMIN FRANKLIN TirUsf l Witnesses 3 r HARRY J.
