uNrrr-u) STATES PATENT OFFICE..-
HERMAN L. WITTSTEIN, OF NEW HAVEN; CONNECTICUT, A SSIGNOR TO THE ATLAS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW- HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATIONOF CONNECTICUT.
' KNIFE SHARPENER.
1 Application filed February 2, 1925. Seria1 No..6,31.
the structure of such a device that it may be produced from the mimimum amount of metal, the fastening portion thereof arranged substantially parallel with the ax1s of the sharpening rolls and the space below the rolls being open and accessible for purposes of cleaning, etc. q
of my improved knife sharpener will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the description hereinafter contained, and where in a preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting an understanding of the same.
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate like parts in the sev- 0 cral figures;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new and improved knife sharpener;
Figure 2 is a plan View thereof; and
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View 5 thereof, taken generally upon line 33 of Figure 2.
As herein described; 10 designates the base portion of the standard; 11 the substantially parallel side portions; and 12 the 0 foot portions, which project laterally from each side of the base portion, and each havingan 0pening'13 therethrough for a fastening device or the like.
Rotatably mounted upon the pins 1;,
5 fixed in the side portions 11, are the sharpening rolls 15 and spacing washers 16, the peripheries of the rolls overlapping slightly, as is usual.
The details and arrangement of the parts Thestandard is preferably, but not necessarily made of sheet metal and the openings 17 in the side portions 11, from which the foot portions 12 are formed, leave an open space underneath the overlapping periphcries of the rolls that is accessible for cleanlVith this knife sharpener the passing of a I cloth or the like through .the openings 17 and underneath the rolls 15, will remove any accumulated foreign matter.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A knife sharpener composed of a flat ba se of relatively considerable length and width, parallel sides extending upwardly from the base and having openings of a size to readily admit a cleaning cloth, a pair of pins carried by the. sides and extendin transversely of the base, rolls carried by the ins, and lateral feet extending outwardly mm the sides of the base and having openings to receive fastenings, said feet being disposed in' the plane of the base and said rolls being spaced a distanceabove the base,
whereby to enable cleaning of the base by movement of a cloth laterally of the base v and through the openings of the sides and beneath the rolls, the ends of the sides terminating at the sides of. the base so as to enable a cloth to be moved longitudinally of the base and beneath the rolls, the rolls being overlapped in a line coextensive with a line bisecting the feet, so as to causethe sharpening movements of the knife to occur in the vertical plane in which the last mentioned line lies; l
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto aflixed my signature.
HERMAN LYWITTSTEVIN.
