UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
HOWARD M. NICHOLS, OF SWARTHMORE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE ATLAN- 'IIC REFINING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
' CONTAINER.
Application" filed February 17, 1921. Serial No. 445,593.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. NICHOLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swarthmore, county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Container, of which the following is a specification.
My invention resides in a container whose body portion is of fibrous material, as cardboard, paste board, or other paper-like material, having a head or end secured to the body by a spun or rolled sheet metal member which grips the body by compression into it, without substantial or material cutting or rupture of the fibrous material.
. My invention resides in a container ofthe character hereinafter described and claimed.
For an illustration of one of the various forms my invention may take, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which: 1
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view, partly in elevation, of a container embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional View, on larger scale.
Referring to the drawing, C is the body or container proper, in cylindrical or other form, consisting of fibrous material, as paste board, cardboard or other paper-like or fibrous material.
By way of example, it may be stated that the member C may be made up by winding upon a suitable form a long sheet or ribbon of paper whose width is equal to the length of the body C. The several layers of paper are preferably bound to each other by suitable binding or adhesive material, the number of layers varying in accordance with the desired thickness of the body C.
The container C is closed at either or both ends by the head H, of sheet iron or sheet steel, or other sheet metal, which may be continuous and form the entire closure, which, however, may be formed in part of other material and secured to the body C by the structure about to be described.
Fitting the inside of the container C is the flange F, which extends away from the main or flat portion of the head, across the end of the container C, and is spun or rolled into the loop or bead L between whose inner portion M and the flange F the body C is firmly gripped and held, the curved portion M of the roll or bead indenting or compressing the member 0 at O, leaving the fibers of the material of the member C substantially intact. That is, the roll M indents or compresses the material without serious cutting or rupture of the fibers of the body C, as would otherwise occur if the end or edge E of the roll were forced into the material of the container C.
By this structure, which avoids serious of paste board or paper-like material, utilized as drums or containers for asphalt and similar materials.
Vhat I claim is:
1. A container comprising a fibrous body, an end closure having a sheet metal flange and an open bead integral therewith and spaced from the flange, a portion of the curved surface of said bead indenting said body and holding it against said flange.
2. An end closure member for a drum of fibrous material, comprising a substantiall circular sheet metal member provided with a channel portion adjacent to its periphery, the peripheral portion of said member ing bent to substantially circular form to provide a rounded surface for clamping the end of the drum against the side of the chain nel opposite thereto.
3. A container comprising a drum of fibrous material. anda co-acting end closure therefor of sheet metal having a flat surface parallel with and engaging the inner surface of the drum and extending forwardly to and-across the end of said drum and backwardly along the drum and terminating in an inturned portion of substantially circular form depressed into said drum for clamping said drum against said flat surface.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 15 day of Feburary,
HOWARD M. NICHOLS.
