For this reason, I pret'er to use another' form of the compression band or lock shown in Fig. 6. In this forni, a portion of one side is cut away, leaving projecting ears 27-28 to serve in place of one side. I find that these eai's possess sufficient gripijiing force to hold the tab securely in place, while at the same time the weight of the device itself is materially decreased.

The compression band is in itself practically a spring clip having members iii-Q2 by the adjustment of which the gripping force of the tab as a whole may be regulated. It will be noted that these members Anormally tend to meet ifextended, consequently tit closely on the tab.

One of the other ditlicullies in the proper construction of index tabs has been that of providing sufficient room for the index character, as wellvas siil'licient gripping width without making the tab of undue width. '.lhe cutting away of the center of the conipression band at 3l makes it possible to tit the band closely against the shoulders, and at the saine time permits the use of a narrow band.

It will be noted that when the device is not in place, there will be a simili opening between the flange and the end of the lower member, thus pern'iitting the slipi'iing of the tab on the leaf, regardless of the thickness or texture thereof. This is a distinct improvement over the tabs of which I am aware, as none of them are provided with adjustable gripping means, as the meinbers of the tab itself are lat all limes, both .before and after placing on the leaf, under the saine tension, 4consequently in slipping the old form of tabs on the leaf, unless the paper is quite thick or hard, there is great danger of tearing the leaf. At the same the leaf under considerable tension in order that the tab may not slip olf the leaf after it is in place. For this reason they are more liable to be pulled olf the leaf in the ordinary handling of the book. By the use of my device` however, the members of the tab are not under tension before being placed on the leaf, and consequently can be readily placed thereon, the tension or gripping force being obtained by the use ofthe compression band after the tab is in place.

It will be readily seen that by varying the shape of the flanged end and the compres` sion band any degree of gripping force may be attained, so that the tali will be held in place even to the extent of tearing out a portion of the leaf before 1t will let go its hold. Of course, it is understood that it is not expected that` the gripping force will be so great when the paper is of a liner or softer texture, as, of course, it is not desired to have the tab tear the leaf, but the statement above is made to show the possibility of adjustingthe tab within any reasonable degree. l. further believe I am the -first to combine with a label holder or index tab formed from two members each embodying a label holding portion and a supporting portion, a movable compression device which coplatter together to hold a label between the 'label holding portions and to gripl a support by the supporting portions.

I claim:

1. A label holder or index tab comprising a pair of gripping jaws and a pair vof label holding portions formed from a single piece ot sheet material folded on itself and provided with an index exposure opening, the fold being located on one side of the exposure opening and detachable means for holding, respectively,- both the two label holding portions and the gripping portions together located on the opposite side of the exposure opening.
