YARN WINDING.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in yarn winding, and more particularly to improvements on the article and method described and claimed in my Patent No. 1,572,157 of February 9, 1926.
In accordance with the invention defined in said patent, a groove or depression is formed in the yarn winding and all knots are positioned within such grooves so as to keep them out of the path of the yarn when it is unwound. in said patent contemplates the forming of the groove by providing a tool which bears against the yarn while it is wound on the core.
I have found, when practicing said method, that in the winding of yarn on a paper cone or other core, the groove is not as readily formed in the first few layers of yarn as in subsequent layers on account of the fact that the rigid surface of the core opposes the depression of the yarn. F urthermore, since in the practical operation of the method it is necessary that the tool exert at all times the samepressure, the first few layers of yarn are likely to be injured owing to the fact that they are pressed between the hard surface of the cone and the finger. IVhile this tool bears against the surface of the core (which is usually made of paper or other fibrous material), shreds of the cone fibres will be torn away and embedded in the yarn.
In order to eliminate these drawbacks, in
accordance with the present invention the paper cone or the like is grooved substantially in alignment with the stationary tool under which the yarn passes during the winding operation. Owing to the presence 4 of this groove, a corresponding depression will be formed in the yarn winding. Until the groove is filled in by yarn, the tool will only lightly bear against it. However, as the layer of yarn on the core thickens, the
4 pressure exerted by the tool will increase.
This will insure the formation of the desired depression in the yarn winding throughout its width without injuriously affecting the innermost layers of yarn.

.The paper cone 1 has a roughened surface (indicated along the edges and near the centre) so as to anchor the first few layers of yarn. Intermediate its ends and at right angles to the longitudinal axis, a groove 2 is formed in the cone 1. The edges of the groove are rounded and in its trough the rough cone surface is smoothed. The finger 5 is so positioned on a bracket (not shown herein but fully illustrated in said patent) that it bears only lightly against the cone surface in the trough of groove 2. This, as well as the smoothness of the cone at this point, will insure against the tearing away of paper fibres.

circular depression 4 will be formed therein withstanding the fact that the finger 5 bears only lightly against the yarn.
IVhat I claim is 1. The method of winding yarn on a core which consists in depressing part of the core surface and winding the yarn on the core so that a depression be formed in the yarn winding in alignment with the depressed part of the core, and placing knots within said depression of the yarn Winding.
2. The method of winding yarn on a core which consists in providing a groove in the core intermediate its ends, winding the yarn on the core so that a depression be formed in the yarn winding in alignment with the groove, and placing knots within said depression. s
3. The method of winding yarn on a grooved core which consists in bearing with a tool against the core in alignment with the groove during the winding of the yarn thereon to produce a groovein each layer of yarn.
