Description

H. WILLIAMS.
Harness Traces.
Patented Dec. 16, 1873.
WITNESSES.
AM F/MID-LHHOGRAPH/L CaM Xlosaolwrs Moms) Att0rney's.,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROMEYN WILLIAMS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-TRACES.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent N 0. 145,708, dated December 16,1873 application filed December 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoMEYN WILLIAMS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and in the State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in a trace composed of a leather strap with a steel plate running its entire length, and attached to it by means of staples passing over the plate and through the strap and clinched on the opposite side, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved trace, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.
A represents a leather trace or strap, of the kind generally used for that purpose. Along the outside of this strap or trace A is laid'a plate, B, of steel or other suitable sheet metal, which extends the entire, or nearly the entire, length of the trace, and is fastened to the same by means of a series of metal staples, O 0. These staples pass over the steel plate B,
and their pointed ends are passed through the leather A and clinched on the opposite side, as shown in Fig. 2. If by any accident the steel plate B should become broken the clinched ends a a can readily be unbent, the staples taken out, and the broken plate replaced by a new one.
A trace thus made is strong and durable, andis almost as flexible as one made exclusively of leather.
To two of the staples O O is riveted a short leather or metal strap, D, which forms a loop for the back strap.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the leather trace A, metal plate B, and the staples O-O, said staples passing over the plate and their pointed ends a a forced through the leather and clinched on the opposite side, all substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the leather trace A, metal plate B, staples G O, and strap I), all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of December, 1873.
ROMEYN WILLIAMS.
