IMPROVEMENT iN COMBINED SHU TTER AND WINDOW FASTEN-ERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,343, dated December 9, 1873; application filed October 18, 1873.

To all whom i5-'may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. FRY, of Brooklyn, inthe county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastener for Shut-ters, Doors, Src., of which the following is a specication:

The invention consists in fastening the catches of a shutter and window by the same lever, but so that they may be unt'astened separately, as hereinafter described.

The arrangement is such that, when the shutter or door is fastened, all parts, except the inside handle, are concealed from view, and access from without for forcible entry is eft'ectually prevented, and the fastening and unfastening of shutters can be effected without opening the windows. A spring is arranged with the shutters to throw them open when they are unfastened. It may also be used with gates and doors, if required.

The spring-catch is provided with a metal case iliade in two parts, which form a lining for the mortise through the sill or frame, and afford better bearing's for it and for the pivots of the catch than the wood sides would, and the parts of the said casing are contrived so that, when they are placedv together preparatory to being put in the mortise, they receive the pivot of the catch in opposite holes formed for it,and are held together to confine the catch by the walls of the mortise.

The said lining may be provided with a flange on the inside ot" the sill, to preventit from being pulled outward.

My invention also consists in utilizing this shutter-fastening for locking the window-sash by means of a stud-catch on it projecting down from the lower edge, and engaging the springcatch.

Figure l is a top view of a shutter and a portion/I of a window-sill, with a portion of the latter sectioned horizontally, showing the application of my improved fastening; it is also a sect-ion ot' the lower sash and the fastening for it. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of a window, with a part sectioned on the line .t w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line y y of Fig. 1.

A is the shutter 5 B, the window-sill, C, the stud-catch on the shutter; D, the springeatch in the sill; F G, the metal lining; l-I, the pivot; I, the spring which throws the catch D, and J a spring for throwing the shutter or door open when released by the springcatch.

It will be seen that the stud hook or catch enters the socket and engages the springcatch, which holds it inside, so that it is et'- fectually secured against being tampered with from without by means of thin blades or other instruments inserted between or under the shutters.

While the contrivance is more particularly designed for window-shutters, it will be seen that the arrangement is alike applicable to doors and gates, and I propose to use it for them.

To utilize the catch D for fastening the window-sash K also, I provide a stud-catch, L, on the lower cross-piece, so as to project down through a hole in the window-sill and engage the said catch, as represented in Fig. 2.

In order to unfasten the window without .unfastening the shutter, I arrange the stud K so that it will be released by moving the catch-lever about half the distance necessary to release the shutter.

Instead of `having the inner end of the catchlever D extended into the room and finished with a knob, it may stop a little short, as represented in the drawing, and be concealed by a little door, M.

A material advantage of this fastener is the simple Inode of applying the case F G, which is effected by boring a couple of holes through the sill, removing the wood between them, and inserting the case from the inside with the catch-lever in it.

The stud O is also applied in a simple manner. By preference it is made separate from the face-plate to be used with it, so that it can be let into the shutter more or less to suit the catch-lever, which may vary as to the distance from the hook to the outside, owing to the varying widths of sills, and it is fastened by a pin, N.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters IatentrIhe shutter having stud-catch C in front, and subjacent spring J in the rear, combined with a sash, K, having' the spring-lever I l) and a sill having stud-catch L, as and for the purpose described.
