While I am aware of the fact that sepa-y rable buttons have been heretofore manufactured, those with which I am familiar have been to a large extenty more or less complicated in structure, and in a number of instances were so constructed thatthey would easily be pulled apart when 'subjected tov abnormal pressure while others when once assembled could not readily be taken apart except by undue exertion,

My invention is directed 4toward a separable button which when once applied cannot accidentally come apart, but which may by the application of a simple tool be disassembled and reused as often as necessary and practically indefinitely in view of the fact that the parts are of sturdy con struction and not liable to break.

Further, the particular locking device for the button attaching means is so arranged that it is neither unsightly nor in a position to interfere'with the application of the button through the button-hole, be-l ing disposed withina recess in the button face, lwhich latter therefore remains free and unobstructed.

the body ofl which I preferto construct in Ithe-form ofa metal shell comprising a base portion 4, and a top member 6, spaced apart and joined at their peripheries at the ypoint 8 defining thereby a recess 10.

The base portion 4 is provided with a depending centrally located stud or shank 12, while the top member 6 is provided with ya central and preferably circular aperture 14 to permit access to the interior ofthe shell for purposes to be presently described.

For the purpose of separably attaching the button to a garment or other fabric 16,

I provide the stud or shank 12 with an aXial threaded opening to receive the threaded stem 18 ofa screw, the peripherally knurled head 20 of which is smooth on its inner face and cooperates with the smooth opposed face of the stud or shank to grip the fabric 16 when the screw is turned home, the end of the screw .being pointed as at 22to enf *i able it to puncture or penetrate the fabric.

.To the end that the button and thel attaching screw may not be relatively` rotatable or displaced, I provide a locking means for the'screw, this comprising a nut 24 preferably of the wing vtype which is threaded on the' free end of the screw' 18,

The recess 10 there# fore securely houses the nut 24 which after being screwed home is free of contact with anything which might tend to loosen or displace it. Furthermore, by constructing the body of the button in the formof a shell, the article is materially lightened in weight and the cost of material considerably reduced.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desireto protect by Letters Patent is: s

l. A separable button of the character described, comprising a buttonV member provided with a facial recess, a stud formed integral with and depending from the bottom face of said button and provided with an axial threaded bore, a fastening member for said button comprising` a screw adapted to pass through said threaded bore and having an external operating head, and a lock nut secured on the inner end of said screw and disposed wholly within said reture.
