J'osnrrr J. NELSON, or Bbs'r oN, ngss'acnusnr'rs.
our! Barron,
n i et file ew l. .9.2 Sank- T9.- 99. 9-
110 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrrr Nn'psoN, a citizen of the United States residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of ldassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to the art of separable fasteners and has more particular reference to a cuff button of the type including a head and socket member, the primary object of the invention being to provide a cuff button of this type, wherein the same may be readily disposed within or removed from the cuffs of shirts without occasioning any great trouble upon the part of the wearer, which is now the case in practically all forms of cuff buttons with which I am familiar.
An additional object is to provide an article of the foregoing character wherein the socket member of the button is void of any complicated spring members for retaining the head therein which in cuff buttons of this type is a great expense and when the spring once becomes broken, the cuff button is no longer useful.
An additional and important object is to provide a cuff button wherein the elements thereof are of such a construction as to prevent the turning of the button within the cup and the consequent detachment of the parts with respect to each other.
Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same comprising the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described. shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section, of a cuff button constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a detail side elevational view of one of the members of the button, and
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the other member of said button.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, my novel cuff button constitutes the provision of a pair of members designated generally 5 and 6, respectively. These members consist of relatively short but wide oval shaped shanks 5' and 6, respectively;
head, plates or" disks 5? and, 6 respectively, i lft'vely smaller base" plates 5? a'ndft". r f f s't lyi I The shank, head plate or disk, and base plate or disk of each cuff button member are integrally joined together as clearly shown in the different views, and it will be apparent that the members 5 and 6 of the cuff button are adapted to be inserted within the button hole of a cuff member and it will of course be apparent that the head plate and base plate of each cuff button member en-- gages upon the opposite side of the button hole and due to the fact that the shank portion of each button member is of an oval shape the same will be received snugly within the cuff button hole for obviously preventing the turning movement of the member within the button hole.
Centrally of the base plate or disk 5 of the button member 5 there is formed a laterally extending relatively short shank 7 that is formed integrally with a narrow oval-shaped head 8 that is adapted for engagement through an oval shaped slot 9 in the base plate or disk 6 of the button member 6 after the members 5 and 6 have been properly positioned within the button holes of a cuff. Inwardly of the oval shaped opening 9 in said disk or plate 6* of the member 6 the shank 6 thereof is formed with a circular socket 10 of a diameter equivalent to the longitudinal axis of said oval shaped head 8 for obviously allowing the button member 5 to be rotated a one-quarter turn in either direction with respect to the button member 6 which rotation of one member with respect to the other will securely lock the members together and prevent the disengagement thereof and the consequent unfastening of the cuff.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel and simplified form of cuff button and one that may be manufactured and marketed at extremely small cost and-one that will, I believe, meet with all of the. requirements for a successful commercial use.
Even though I have herein shown and described the most practical embodiment of the invention with which I am at this time familiar, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
A button structure comprising a pair of' members, the said members being of the same configuration and dimension, the members being provided at their inner ends With circular discs and at their outer ends With circular heads, the heads being of greater diameter than the discs, one disc being pro vided at its center With a cylindrical neck portion and a head mounted on the neck portion, said head being circular in side elevation and elliptical in transverse section, the other disc being provided at its center with an elliptical recess Which communicatesat its inner end with a globular socket, the longer axis of the said recess being equal to the diameter of the socket, the said socket and recess adapted to receive thehead and neck carried by the first mentioned disc. 20
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOSEPH J. NELSON.
