.Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates in general a folding bed, the frame of whichl consists of threesections such as indicated at 2, 3 and 4. These sections will hereinafter be referred to as the inner section, the intermediate section and the outer-section. rlhe sect-ions 2 and 4 are pivotally attached to the intermediate section as indicated at 5 and are foldable thereabout to assume the position shown in Fig. 2, or the extended horizontal position sho-wn in Fig. 1. rlFhe detailed construction of the pivotal connections 5 is more clearly illustrated in Fig. 5. By referring to this figure it can be seen that the three separate sections are constructed of angle iron and that the inner and outer sections are provided with extending lrounded Y, lugs 6, through which the pivotal connections 5 extend. The outer end of each lug 6 is flat 85 as at '7 and forms a lock with the horizontal portion 8 of the intermediate section 3 when a vertical position is assumed as shown by dotted lines at 9. rl`his is of importance `as it limits the pivotal movement 9o between the several sections, for instance, the shoulder 7 locks against movement when a right angular positionis assumed, while an offset 10, formed in the sections 2 and 4, forms a stop shoulder which locks against further movement when a horizontal position is reached. Another important fea- 1 ture is the'fact that the pivotal connection 5 is formed in direct alignment with the stop shoulder 10, thus reducing the lever or the pivots 5 would otherwise be subjected.`

rllhe bed frame as a whole is attached to the running board by means of a pair of screw clamps 11 and as these screw clamps 105 are pivotally attached to the bed frame as at 12, it should be obvious that the bed frame may be folded intothe position Shown in Fig. 2. For the purpose of supporting the bed when extended, legs such as shown at ,111 are provided, one set ot legs being pivotally attached as at 15, wherethe inner and intermediate bed frame sections are connected, while the other set of legs are pivotally attached to the outer frame section at the point indicated at 16. The legs 111 may be tolde'd'up into' alignment with the respective bed -trame sections, but are thoroughly braced and secured when unfolded as shown in Fig. 1 by folding links 17 and a spacing link 18. The bed is also provided with an auxiliary set of legs, shownat 19. rlhese are pivotally attached 'to the head end of the bed and may be folded with relation thereto when not required. They are otherwise secured in theirA extended position by folding links as at 20. The legs 19 are merely employed when it is desired to remove the bed with relation to the foot board which may happen, for instance, when staying in a. permanent camp for a few days or the like, as it may be desirable to use the machine from time to time during a more or less prolonged stay in a certain place. Hence the reason for providing the auxiliary shown at 19.

The foot trame 21 consists of an upright section 23, which is connected by means of cross bars 24. The upright sections are bent .at right angles at their lower ends,

and the frame as a whole is pivotally attached to the outer bed frame section, as at 25. The right angular extensions formed on thelower end of the foot frame have a length exactly half that of the intermediate frame section 3, and it therefore assumes a central position between the main bed frame sections 2 and 4. when the bed is folded as shown in F ig. 2. v'lhe toot frame forms two important functions besides that of a foot frame. First a support for a tent or canopyy covering 26. Secondly a mat- I tress clamp when the bed is to be folded.

And third, a mattress hanger which assumes avertical position when the bed is folded as shown in Fig. 2.' The ltoot frame is held in an upright position when the bed is extended as illustrated in Fig. 1, by means of a pair of brace links 27. These links are pivotally attached to the bed frame section 4 as at 28, and their opposite ends are hook shaped as at4 29. The hook shaped ends of the bracing links engage pins 30 on the foot frame section when this is raised to an upright position, thereby securing the same against collapsing when the tent or canopy 26 is secured thereto. The links 27 also serve another function, to-wit, that of securing the bed :frame sections 2 and 4 against separating when maar 1e folded as the hook ends are then swung ally connected to the outer free end of said links as at 34:. rllhe links are so short that the inner end 'ot the foot board will engage the. main cross bar or end section of the bed trame 2 and it will therefore assume an angular position when the bed is extended, and it wlll assume a horizontal position on top of the running board of the automobilel 'as shown at 35 when the bed trame is folded. The head board serves two important functions, first that of supporting pillows, etc., when the bedv is extended, and secondly that of supporting the mattress,

pillows and bedding when the bed is folded,

and furthermore in such a position that a space is formed between the head boardy and the running board, thus excluding dust to a large extent and preventing wetting of the bedding in case of'rainy weather, that iswater collecting on the running board can freely run on' and will at no time come in contact with the bedding, due to the spacihg formed between the head board and the running board, the spacing being maintained due to the fact that the board rests on top of the clamps 11 by which the bed as a whole is attached to the running` board.

The canopy 26 employed .may be'so constructed that it entirely incloses 'the bed,

and it is obvious that it maybe supported in any manner desired as this forms no part of the present invention. For instance it may be attached to the auto top as shown at 40, and its opposite end may be secured in any suitable manner to the toot frame 21. The canopy 'may or may not be employed as conditions or individuals may require.

To thoroughly brace the bed when in an extended position, I employ a cross frame 41. This frame is oil'set as shown to pre vent interference with the spring mattress shown atl 42, and while it may lbe secured in any suitable manner, I have here shown it attached to the pivotal connection which the `intermediate section nected with the inner bed :trame section 2. This feature, together with the construction and arrangement of the legs 14, is of comparatively little importance in the present case as it is covered and 'forms the subject matter of my former patent previously referred to, the important features ot the present invention being the specific construction ot the brake joint or connection 5 between the bed frame sections and the 8 is conmaarre construction and attachment of the foot and head frames described, and as these ar more or less specifically illustrated, l wish it understood thatvarious changes in form and proportion may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, similarly that the materials and finish of the several parts employed may be such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate or` varying conditions may demand.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters lllatent is l. ln a folding bed of the character described a bed frame consisting of an intermediate section, an inner section and an outer section, a foot frame, a right angular extension on the bottom portion of the foot frame, a pivotal connection between the foot frame and the outer bed frame section, pivotal connections between the inner bed frame section, the outer bed frame section and the intermediate section, permitting folding movement of the several sections with relation to each other, and folding movement of the foot frame with relationI thereto, so that it will assume an intermediate position between the bed frame sections and serve as a han er for the support of the mattress arid bed ing. i

2. ln a folding bed of the character described a bed frame consisting of an intermediate section, an inner section and an outer section,a foot frame, a right angularv extension on the bottom portion of the foot frame, a pivotal connection between the foot frame and the outer bed frame section, pivotal connections between the inner bed frame section, the outer bed frame section and the .intermediate section, permitting folding movement of the several sections with relation to each other, and folding movement of the foot frame with relation thereto, so that it will assume an intermediate position between the bed frame sections and serve as. a hanger for the support of the mattress and bedding, a head board, and a pair of links pivotally connected at one end to said headboard, and at their opposite ends to the head end section of the inner bed frame section.

In a folding bed of the character described a bed frame consisting of an intermediate section, an inner section and an outer section, a foot frame, a right angular extension on the bottom portion of the foot frame, a pivotal connection between the foot frame and the outer bed frame section, pivotal connections between the inner bed frame section, the outer bed frame section and the intermediatev section, permitting folding movement of the several sections with relation to each other, and folding movement of the foot frame with relation it will assume an interbetween the bed frame sections and serve as a hanger for the support of the mattress and bedding, a hea-d board, a pair of links pivotally connected at one end to said head board, and at their opposite ends to the head end section of the inner bed frame section, a support to which thereto, so that mediate position the inner bed frame section is pivotally attached, and means` for maintaining a spacing between said support and the head board.

6. lin a folding hed of the character described a bed frame consisting of an inner section, an intermediate section and an outer section, pivotal connections between said sections permitting the sections to assume a horizontal position, and also permitting the.l inner and outer sections to assume a vertical positionand the intermediate section to assume a horizontal position when folded, a footjframe pivotally attached to the foot end of the outer bed frame section, an offset section on the foot frame causing it to assume an intermediate position between the inner and cater hed fra-me sections when lie folded, and a pair of bracing links pivotally attached to the outer bed frame section, said links adapted to lock the foot frame in position when the bed is extended and said bracing links adapted to lock the bed frame sections against separation when folded.

In a folding bed of the character described, a bed frame consisting of an inner section, an intermediate section and an outer section, pivotal connections between said sections permitting the sections to assume a horizontal position, and also permitting the inner and outer sections to assume a vertical position, and the intermediate section to assume a horizontal. position when folded, a

foot frame pivotally attached to the foot endV of the outer bed frame section, an offset section on the foot frame causing it to assume an intermediate position between the inner and outer bed frame sections when folded, a pair of bracing links pivotally attached to the outer bed frame section, hook shaped ends on said links, pins on the foot frame With which said Ahooked ends are engageable to lock the foot frame in vertical position when the bed is extended, and pins on the sides of the inner bed frame section with which' the hooked ends and the links are engageable to lockv the bed frame sections against separation when in folded position.

8. In a folding bed of the character described the combination with the inner bed frame section, of a head board, a pair of links pivotally attached yat one end to the head board and at their opposite ends to the inner bed frame section, and a head bar extending crosswise of' the inner bed frame section adaptedto support the inner end of the head boa-rd, said head yboard extending over the head bar and said links being so short that the head board will assume an aaa-agie `angular position wit-h relation to the inner bed frame section when this is extended and permitting the head board to assume a horizontal position when the bed frame is folded.

9. ln a folding bed of the character described tliegcombination with the inner bed frame section, of a head board, a pair of links pivotally attached at one end to the head board and at their opposite ends to the inner bed frame section, a head bar extending cross wise of the inner bed frame section` adapted to support the inner end of the head board, Said head board extending over the head bar and said links being so short that the foot board will assume an angular position with relation to the inner bed frame section when this is extended and permitting the head board to assume a horizontal position when the bed frame is folded, a Support, and a pair of screw clamps pivotally attached to the bed frame adapted. to secure the frame to the support, said clamps being engageable with the head board to maintain a spacing between the head board and the support when folded.

10. ln a folding bed of the character described, the combination with the inner' bed frame section` of a head board, a pair of links pivotally attachedat one end to the head board and at the opposite ends to the inner bed frame Section, and ahead bar extending crosswise of a corresponding end of the bed frame section adapted to support the head board.
