G. M- STAFFORD- v MILK some CAP LIFTER.
ILED APR. 15. I922.
Patented elo, 2'9, 1923i a 2:? 2i a GEORGE lll. STAFFORD, 0.
IEILK-BOTTLE-CAP LIFTER.
Application filed April 15, 1922. Serial No. 553,080.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Gnonen M. Sixinrono a subject of the King of England, residing; at Philadelphia, in the county ot Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania have in vented new and usetul llmprovenieiits in a lllilk-Bottle-Cap Litter of which tho lollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to new and as improvements in a milk bottlecap hit and has for its object to construct such a device from a single piece of wire so bcnt as to produce ll shaped clip havinga barb projecting from one arm thereof atone end and a finger piece projecting); from the other arm at the same end so thatsaid barb and finger piece are in suliistantially endwiss alignment. r l
Another object of this invention is to produce a cap litter that will besimple in. construction, small and compact though stro and durable and which will be relatively in expensive in the cost of manufacture.
ll ith these ends in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically ClGSigIIQ tGCllDY the claim.
In. order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may linden stand how to make and use the same, T will ful describe its construction in detail rote/1P ring by numerals to the accompanying); drawings forming a part of this application in which I Fig. l. is a fragmentary sectional view (s? a milk bottle with a cap therein showing the cap litter in elevation and in the posi tion to insert in the cap.
Fig. 2, is a similar view illustrating the cap lifter lnserted 1n the cap' Fig. 3, 1s a side elevation of the cap lifter at right angles to the SllOWlIlQ in. Figs. 1 and 2.
In carylng out my invention as here embodied 2 represents a milk bottle of any ordinary or well known construction the mouth of which is closed by a cap 3 or disc or" paper or other suitable material.
The cap lifter as a whole is designated by the numeral 4 and consists of a single piece of wire'so bent as to produce a substantially horizontal U shaped clip 5 including two parallel spaced arms 6 and 7. From one of these arms, as 7, at the open end of the clip projects a barb 8 at right angles to said arm so as to lie in a substantially vertical position, the free end of said barb being pointed, while trom the other arm, also at the open end of the clip, projects a linger piece 9 at right angles to its arm so as to lie in a substantially vertical position. This arrangement brings the barb and tinper piece into practically endwise alignment and therefore the pressure J ecessary to ca so the barb to pierce the paper cap is directed in straight line although the U shaped clip is oi'i'set therefrom. The finger piece is preferably in the form of a loop of substantially triangular shape as will be obvious from In practice the cap litter 1S held vin a tilted posltion as shown in Fig. 1, during the operation of piercing the. cap thus bringing the open end of the clip down ward then when the barb is forced through the cap thelower or inner arm 7 will enthe cap the elbow or joint between the barb and 7 when. by a slight sidewise movement of the litter or a movement in the direction lengthwise of the clip in conjunction with the downward movement said arm 7 willbe forcedthrough the cap. After the arm '7 is passed through he cap the cap litter is moved into a vertical position as shown lilFlQ. 2 so that said cap will lie between the arms of the clip giving sufficient bearing surface on both sides oi? the cap to enable the same to be readily removed or replaced.
The cap lii'tcr maybe left in the cap after the latter has been removed from the bottle and said lifter used as a support for the capwhich will prevent itjirom falling flat'on the table or other surface on. which it is resting".
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits oi"? the appended. claim without departing from the spirit oi. my invention Having thus fully described my invcn tion. what ll claim as new and useful is 2- As an article of manufacture, a bottle cap lifter formed from a single piece of wire so bent as to produce a horizontal U shaped clip one arm of which is adapted to underlie the bottle cap when the cap litter is inserted therein and give a movement length wise of the clip while the other arm is adapted to overlie said bottle cap said arms being of the same length toprovide equal a v o healing surfm'es 0n oppogi e Mesa of the cap, relatim v 1011;; barb firojectihp; at right nudes from the lower arm t the open and :he din for piercing: the bottle cap and a finggi piece projectin 1t figh't'angls from the other arm at said open end 0 5 the clip am} in substantially @ndwise alignment With said hath whereby the pl c5ame on the finger place to cause the barb 0 pxerc tho cap will be directed in a straight line. 10
In testlmony whereof, I e hvrmmto afiixed my signature.
